Same question... cigars and such?

Is this 100% forsure now or still up in the air as to when it starts?
Public Places as in anywhere in the public area outside your home or is walking around/out back at work still ok?

Exactly, on occasion I like to enjoy my sheesha outside. Think that smoking ban needs to be clarified with some specifics, like what if I wanted to smoke chicken bones or something.

I'm for the bylaw, but I know Cafe Med was trying to get exempt. If not, they should build a patio. (in Manitoba you can smoke on patios, not indoors, here, you can't smoke indoors where it is most hazardous to our health, but you can outside where there is natural ventilation? Makes no sense) to the bylaw tho.

+1 for ^^^^. I've gone to a few places in BC and what some have set up is a seperate room not entirely enclosed for just smoking. But you don't go home smelling like you just smoked a whole pack at the bar, which in actuality you probably did.

Sweeeet, I goto school in Edmonton and during the year the no-smoke thing in the bar is wicked. When I came back to calg for summer I overlooked how wicked the no smoking thing is. Now I'll only reek like my sweaty ass after a night at the bar.

HuMz

Majority of club's, pub's, casino's will all still allow smoking past the jan 2007 mark, they will just have to have a seperate ventilation system in an enclosed smoking area.

I don't think they would. It applies to ALL bars so i don't see someone losing business because their customers are going to another bar which allows smoking.

the bars in vancouver are non smoking now...it's not a big deal actually, being a smoker myself, i still prefer the non smoking policy in bars, makes the place feel less dirty. all the smokers just go outside and light up. only problem was that they didn't put butt bins outside so people were just flicking them anywhere. by the end of the night their were cigerette butts and spit all over the front of the bar

Unknown303
07-25-2006, 09:39 AM
All Red Deer establishments are also none smoking, and that includes none smoking on patios. But now when you goto the bar you have to walk past all the people standing around in the parking lot smoking. But its a lot nicer inside when you don't have to dodge smokes burning holes in your shirts and crap like that. Way to go Calgary.

even when i smoked regularily, as opposed to socially now, I've always been a proponent of non-smoking bars. Smoking os not banned, or illegal - this is not the end to smoking. You will just have to go outside to smoke.

Problems this will casue - bars will have to figure out how to regulate people waiting in line to get into a bar, then leaving the bar to smoke outside. Solution - probably some sketchy 'smoking' area by the kitchen garbage in the back alley!

Also watch for the emergence of 'Private Clubs' where membership is required. What's inside - same as any other bar/pub --> pool tables, VLTs, etc but you'd be able to smoke inside as this is not a public place! They have them in all the other non-smoking cities

Lol... you drinking coffee is not going to make the person next to you reek of it. Cigarettes are gross, I'm glad this is going in to place sooner rather than later. I hate going to the bar or a pub and come out reeking of cigarettes.

And those of you that talk about bars and such losing money, that probably isn't too big of a concern... Pretty much every other major city in Canada is smoke free i believe, and most of them haven't had a huge problem/

I can totally see this. Every bar in calgary is suddenly going to become a "private club", it'll cost you $5 a year to be a member, and you get a little piece of scrap paper saying you're a member, and if you're not, just pay $5 at the door and suddenly you'll be a "member"

Do you really think that people are just going to stay home a drink?

Winnipeg is smoke free and the bars are still VERY busy. Winnipeg even has a minimum drink price ($2.25) and it didnt hurt business at all, even though everyone thought that it would.

Doesn't matter if it's smoking or not, people who want to go out and drink will still go out and drink.

In fact, it'll be easier to pick-up a girl (a smoker anyways), since you'll all be outside together in a big group complaining about the smoking law, talk about an ice breaker.

Yah, it's excellent. But I find car exhaust fumes worse, and I come home reeking of that, so I can't wait for the next step which will be anti-idling law, much higher emmission controls, and a ban on non-electric cars, or cars with more than 100 hp.

Precedent is a dangerous thing, as is giving up your freedoms one at a time.

Puff... Puff.... Puff... hopefully I can enjoy a couple months of smoking inside before theymake the law. 18 in 2 months.

But really, I hate breathing other ppls smoke. So im for the law. It seems unfair in a sence, places should be allowed to make smoking rooms, but from what I understand, unless they have one BEFORE the law is made they arent allowed to make one.

I read in the Herald today that bars may install ventilation systems and have the whole bar their "smoking room". Total BS in my opinion.

Slashin'...what are you talking about coffee smell man. Let me get this straight. Someone walking down the street infront of you irritates you b/c their coffee is effecting your health? Get real.

Bars are going to stay busy, period. Its just like when resturants such as Tim Hortons went smoke free, all the smokers were bitching on how they were going to go out of business. Look at Edmonton, no one is suddenly bankrupt b/c of no-smoking are they?

The fact that the Mayor voted against the smoking ban kind of pisses me off

The problem with this law is everyone seems to think private property of which the owner allows you to come on to, and which you do voluntarily is now deemed as public property.

This case is not an issue of the rights of smokers versus non smokers; it is in fact an issue of what exactly is property ownership.

For what it is worth I have never smoked a cigarette and never will, but as I said it is not the smoking I am debating here.

07-26-2006, 08:18 AM
There will be ways around the law. Then the ways around the law will be banned. Then people will complain about smokers smoking out front of buildings(there's already a law about that that's not enforced, or listened to)

I wish smokers would not toss the butts everywhere though, that bugs me!

When are people also going to realize that it's killing them??? HELLO?

I smoked for many years and it took me till my dad had a heart attack and died for me to realize that he could still be around today if it weren't for the fact that he smoked for like 30 years.. He never got to see me drive a car down a race track or own my own home.. Come on people wake up.. Been smoke free for about 6 years now and can say to this day that i've ever had one desire to start again.

You guys are scary. This whole ban of smoking is so unbelievably disturbing. It's not even an example of the democracy that is supposedly so great in this country. It’s a few men and women with fine hats who have the power to tell people what they can and can't do with their property. If there are any business owners here you have to see what’s going on here! You are allowing the government to control you even more. Unreal.

I like the no smoking rule its nice to come home from the bars in Ontario not reeking like smoke. The bars here definetly have not been hurt by the no smoking rule. Everyone just smokes in the alley beside the bar.
