View Full Version : I guess you win some and you lose some!!

Okay, I guess here's the first win for tonight. I basically raced two 240's and one win and one loss!! haha, anyway, first race, well, wasn't really a race, the winner I guess was the guy who could get traction!! It was a red 240 with an sr20det and like I said, it was wet off the line haha, but I was the one who got traction and all was good, but in hindsight, when we were giving it down the street, he was in front and I was turning behind him and I was slowly catching up...maybe cuz we were approaching a red light, who knows!! :dunno: haha.

2nd race:
Oh shit!! A white silvia!! hahah, any guess to which car this was? Anyway, we raced on mcknight at a roll from around 60 or so and I was in front for a few seonds until this Skud missle of a car rocketed by me! I shut the race down at around 180 as were both ready to turn and in the end, he was around 6 cars ahead of me. I think from a stop it might have been different!! hahaha I guess it doesn't help that the guy driving both the cars is my boss and in the end, I didn't want to make him look bad so I lost just to keep my job!!  haha but yah, his white 240 is s fucking beast!!! I'm sure that he is running mid 13's at least!! His best is a 13.9 but he's done a few other mods and the way that that thing flew, it had to be at least mid to low 13's!! Good Ol' Autodream!!!! hahahaha

Have you raced that punk in the blue WRX yet? If you can beat him, that means you will most definitely beat stock S2000's cause not even my 7000RPM launch can pass that fcuker! haha

no man, it's an earlier one, something closer to 2000, kinda like wynn's car! It has those sticker testarossa vents on the side!! haha, but nice front mount intercooler. The car is pretty quick too, it's got a blitz blow off valve and I think stock nissan rims...I can't remember. I think the guy who owns it is named peter.:dunno:

What mods have you done to the GTP? I know I can beat stock ones but wouldnt mind seeing how bad I lose to modified ones.

Had a funny race a few months ago, before we got some snow. There was this dude in a GTP and another in a Camaro SS spinning them at the lights getting ready to race. I gave my car a rev to let them know that I wanted in and the guy in the GTP rolled down his window, laughed at me and said "don't bother". I ignored him, light hit green and the Camaro started fish tailing all over as he wasn't getting traction. The GTP and I both had a ton of torque steer and less traction but once we got the tires to stick I blew him away only to be passed quickly by the Camaro...at least I made the dude in the GTP eat his words.. ;-)

I like those GTPs though, nice cars and a ton of potential

hahah, I figured as much cuz I took a look at the spec sheets and it seems like the hp figures are pretty low at around 150 and that doesn't seem like it's enough to beat a gtp considering that the alero isn't that light either!! I also didn't think there was much in terms of after market support for that car!haha, anyway, nice work man, look forward to seeing you on the streets!!

Yeah thats the 4cyl model. The 6cyl model (which is what I have) is basically the same as a Grand Am GT.

But yeah, the car is heavy so I need to lighten it and aftermarket parts are hard to find so I have had to have a lot custom fabbed which is why the bill is so high so far. I am sure my turbo set up will cost me close to 5K as well but it should be worth it.

Leo, if you want to reduce wheel hop, get some energy suspension motor mounts..... I've heard from alot of people it makes a huge difference. All tho at idle your car vibrates a lil more.

I drove a GTP supercharged, I found it to be the worst sports car I ever drove it was slow, and the worst body roll. eww.

Also I had a 6cyl alero rental (auto) I bagged the shit out of it, and for an auto, pedal pinned to the floor it shifted at redline everytime!

But you are right a stock Alero would lose to a GTP hands down. There is actually a lot of potential for those cars given the right parts and the right work.

Why not?

Seriously, what do you drive and why is it so much better? I like the looks and the performance/handling of a stock Alero so I bought one and improved on it. The nice thing as well is that no one expects it to be fast so its a cool sleeper type car.

Yeah thats what I said. I know nothing about this car that everyone is talking about other than it is blue and is a WRX. So, until I actually see the car or someone tells me what it is putting to the wheels then yes, I *think* it would beat me. From the subaru web site;

Horse Power 227 @ 6000 RPM

Torque (ft.lbs.) 217 @ 4000 RPM

that tells me that if it is a stock Imprezza WRX (which are the stats I have posted) it would be a close race. But something tells me that this car everyone is talking about isn't stock....

Soo.....with those mods that you've listed and having a stock 170 fly wheel hp, you are now up to 200 Wheel hp? So you essentially gained over 50 wheel hp from those mods? Man, if that's the case, why'd I go turbo?:dunno: Something to me just doesn't add up

The headwork alone is good for almost that. I'll post some dyno results in a few weeks -- I am waiting for my TB and MAF to come in before I head down.

I want turbo because the superchargers available for my platform suck ass. Plus not too many guys have strapped a turbo on a 3.4 so I thought I would try. NOS is in the plans as well but only for track use obviously. I said my goal is 200WHP before I do any boost -- I think it is entirely possible with the mods I have left to do.

This is part of why I like the Alero so much -- everyone here is doubting it and that is cool -- feel free to do so. I will post dyno results once I get them and I will post a timeslip from the track. Hopefully, that will be enough to prove my claims. :D

Not to mention that this car is still my daily driver and runs great.

Since the thread is jacked;

I don't think it's that far out of reach. He'll get 30 for sure. I'm assuming one of the pullies is a crank pulley?

I guess one of the main factors is if your engine is not designed to be performance out of the box in the engineering of the motor doing the regular mods is not going to yield the power one would expect or want because your mods all have to go through you engine in the end in, which your engine design could be the bottle neck.

Here is some dialog of a manufactors meeting discussing thee low/mid entry vehicles "we want an engine for this car to be peppy but not expensive to make so we can sell the car for a good price". So things get sacrificed or designed around being cheaper.

Now here is some dialog of a manufactors meeting discussing the performance vehicles "K go with the 3 angle valve job stock, How much are the sodium filled exhaust valves going to cost us?"

K thanks bye.:nut:

Just because various imports don't see a heck of a lot of gains from things like cylander head work doesn't mean good ol domestic motors don't.

So tell me, seeing how you are an expert on the GM 3.4 platform, what would shaving the heads, replacing springs, valves, and major PnP work by arguably the best machinest in Calgary do for me?

Sorry to post twice but here is a dyno sheet from a car -- identical setup as mine (at the time) when the TOG Headers were installed.

This proved that the TOG headers give 19HP at the wheels.

Where do I get in on these friendly runs? :)

I will agree with speedalero about the horse power numbers he is gaining the factory heads and exhaust manifolds are very restrictive from the factory . How else can you explain a 30hp difference between a alero and a montana it's the same motor but the montana comes with 200hp at the flywheel and the alero comes with 170 my gt came with 175hp/205ft/lbs only dyno'd at 136hp at the wheels but will reach higher numbers in the near future and there is a turbo charged v6 alero running around in the state and turning mid 13's at the track

Ya don't have to be a honda to be fast

I'm up for some friendly runs. I'm done with them S2K's for now.

Although I think 50whp isn't a conservative guess by any means, I think it's possible with the mods.

Hey speedyalero, does your fan run off a belt? If not, an electric fan can give you a few extra horses.
I'd suggest the larger rad as the next mod.

Yeah the fan is belt ran. Anyone know a good place to get a larger aluminum rad made? I am also thinking about ripping out the air conditioner all together as one less pully and less weight would be a good thing.

With underdrive pulleys it means anything run off the belt gets less power, including the fan, which means less cooling. An e-fan will give you extra power because it will be better at cooling than the belt ran fan.

Yeah, I am experiancing cooling issues right now -- it doesn't overheat but it is running warm which we all know isn't good. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that.

So tell me, seeing how you are an expert on the GM 3.4 platform, what would shaving the heads, replacing springs, valves, and major PnP work by arguably the best machinest in Calgary do for me?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, it's just that you said that :

So I was assuming that you already had the 200hp to the wheels...unless I'm missing something! :dunno: In any case, I'm still skeptical that any engine will make 50 wheel hp with a port and polish. I don't doubt that you can make any car fast, but realistically, if this were the case, then virtually everyone would be in line for a simple port and polish to gain 50 wheel hp...either that or waiting in line to buy an alero. Well, I guess anyone with a domestic would also be waiting in line cuz honda's don't gain even close to that much and that's with supporting mods too...but then again, imports are different!! So I'm sure that you can see why most of us are questioning your claims. A lot of people come on here and say "I'm gonna have this much hp" or "this same set up on mars was capable of producing 5000 hp and because of Earth's gravatation pull, I'll be getting an extra 50%!!" Well, maybe not the second one so much, but you get the point.

Well, I don't have 200HP at the wheels YET, but I will be there very soon and without any boost. Perhaps 50HP is a bit generous of an estimate, but I made that claim based on the proven 19WHP that a simple set of headers gives.

Everyone questioning my claims is good, its half the reason why I am souping up this car because no one will ever believe that it is fast. Not to mention the point that Rick made, you buy a "performance/sport sedan" and you won't see a heck of a lot of gains from things like PnP (BTW, mine wasn't a simple PnP it was very in depth and very well thought out and done by someone very skilled). But, you take a car that was intended to be your family mid sized type vehicle and simple things like increasing airflow have great effects.

There are Grand Am GTs and Alero's (not many granted) that run in the 13s down south... The reason you don't see people lining up to buy these cars is because parts/mods are hard to find. But, that will be changing soon as my car is the test platform for a company that will be mass marketing performance parts for the 3.4 among other platforms.

Yea good point Lude.

But speedy I was kinda backing you up, you will get 30 for sure and more just not sure how much more. Thing about dyno is they are sometimes not accurate and can be biased, also here in calgary you put out 5% less horse power too, and usally 1 second'ish slower in the 1/4 mile.

Yeah I hear you about the dyno results. When I first dynoed my car it was horrible, I was a total newb didn't know shit not even the correct weight we were off by about 800LBS on the weight and I know that can make a difference. Not to mention I had a spark plug wire loose and my cooling has gone to shit.... :banghead:

You also have to remember that most imports are 4 cyclinder. By that virtue, the manufacturers try to get as much horse power as possible out of an engine because it is only 4 cylinders. With a 3.4litre 6 cylinder that speedy has, the engine's full potential hasn't been extracted in order to keep costs low(which basically means it's a domestic). This is why there's so much gain when putting simple bolt ons and doing port polishing and head work. 50whp is a lot, don't get me wrong. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see 50 extra flywheel horsepower. Also have to remember it's easier getting gains(not percentage gains) out of larger displacement engines than it is say a 4 cyclinder.

just my 2 cents
