Me and a friend have for a while been talking about the idea of making a go-cart. We arn't terribly keen on spending an opulant amount of money, but maybe in the less than 1000 range. Has this been anything that anyone has attempted? We wanted to build it from as much as scratch as possible, and not a "lego-style" kit.

Another idea that we had was the possibility of for more money building something along the lines of a Super 7 kit. For those who have the latest Car and Driver will be able to read the article about the "build your own sports car for under 250 pounds". It seems like a very interesting idea, ie. installing an modestly powered engine in a very light chassis to make a very fun sports car.

Again, these are just speculations for now, does anyone have any ideas, or stories on how they undertook/or would undertake a project such as this?

Did you see the latest episode of Top Gear? They build their own Caterham as well, you can get an idea of what you'll need to do since they have a whole feature on it.

Those Caterhams are sweet.... there is a dealer in BC. Expencive though... fully built they are over 30k.

Love to see someone make thier own version. The Ariel Atom is along those lines... I love that thing.

Funny, I read the same thing and it got me thinking. I ordered this book and its really well done with step by step pictures. The problem is we require a Mazda Miata as a donour car. The book can be had here:
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/0760322872/702-5708741-2670455?v=glance&n=916520&v=glance

Can-Am out in BC sell the 'Stalker' kits that use GM parts.

If you want to stick with the Miata or try somethig different Coveland MotorSport sells kits. This is the route I would go. They have an ebay store:

http://stores.ebay.com/Coveland-Motorsports

and an offical website here:

http://coveland7.com/

Buy the book and see if this is for you. You can expect to spend about $12,000 CAN. If ebay has one of these cars ready to go YOU CANNOT import it. I've heard its now totally illegal to import an already built kit car.

Hope that helped.
