Looking at new tires, the stock ones on my car are 215/65R17
How far outside of that can i go without causing trouble?
There are only 2 manufactures that make that size and they both suck.
How much will a 1.4" change in the overall diameter affect things?

Tire shops have a calculator that will tell you. I'm sure you could find one online too. Try www.tirerack.com.

The tire rack only tells me what tires are sized for my car, not what tires could work on my rims. Any one here work at a tire shop that could help me out?

1.4" will make a significant difference. Your current tire height is 28". 1.4" is 5% different. That will throw off your speedometer too. Lucky you have a truck - I don't think it'll cause any clearance issues.

Not really a truck. Its a Magnum
Good site. Looks like a 245/55R17 will work as well only 1.4% change.
EDIT:
Too bad there isnt anything good in that size either.... looks like i might just have to buy rims too!

upgrade to some 18" wheels and go with a size like 235/55R18
There are quite a few more tire choices in that size.
That size is only about 4 mm taller than stock.
