Wholesale hookups

I was just wondering how all the retailers we see today both on and off-line get the merchandise they sell. How did they become affiliated with certain wholesalers and how do people these days become affiliated with wholesalers (like the eBay power sellers)?

Do you just need to get lucky and meet someone who has wholesale connections or is there a central information center on wholesalers?
