My wife and I just signed the deal on a house in Vernon, BC. However we thought as first-time buyers that we were exempt from the title transfer tax ($2050). Our real estate agent thought so as well, but apparently since it is a provincial tax we needed to have lived in BC for 12 months prior to buying our first house to be exempt from the tax.
What I am wondering is, is there any way that the Alberta tax exemption can be used out there or something?....
Does anybody here know a way to do that?
Since our realtor told us we would be exempt and was wrong he offered to pay the tax, but I feel kind of bad letting him eat the whole amount, so I am trying to find a way for him not to have to pay it. That said I'm not too keen on paying it either, but I'll probably offer to split it 50/50 if we can't find a way out of it.
