Anyone have any experiences with an 01-04 model?

Good car? bad car?

Any comments would be appreciated.

My friend had one. I sat in the passenger seat a few times but didn't drive it. Seems like a solid car, the interior is nice and it drives pretty smooth.

Car looks like one of those overhead projectors you see in school.

The 3rd gen Eclipses are ok. I like the styling and found that it had decent power (obviously go for the V6). Handling was ok but for a sports car, I found the suspension to be a bit squishy. It's a heavy car as well so it's not as nimble as a rsx, 350z, rx8, etc. Interior is decent (too much plastic for my liking) and the stock stereo is middle of the road. Safety features are good and what you would expect on cars these days (ie dsc, abs, etc). My dislike is the fact that it's a FWD sportscar and felt too "heavy". If this were a sedan, I wouldn't have minded the ride quality but this "supposed" to be in the sportscar market.

Personally, I never experienced any trouble with it but apparently a lot of folk in the states had trouble with theirs (weird noises, funny transmission). To me, the 3rd gen eclipse tries to do everything ok but isn't great at any one particular thing (not the fastest, not the best handling, not the best interior, etc). If I were looking into something in that class, I would rather go for the Toyota Celica (little smaller/compact but ride is better), rsx OR if you can find a 2nd gen eclipse/talon.

A friend of mine had an '02 and the back seat is basically non-existant so not good for passengers but then again when you're looking for a sporty vehicle that doesn't matter much. It seemed to go pretty good and was a pretty smooth ride so I'd say not a bad choice and they look really sleek.

Get a 2G Spyder and do the AWD conversion... best of both worlds.

I got a 00 Eclipse GT

They didn't start making them in Canada till 03, so if you want to look for an 01, 02 you will have to go visit the states, unless someone is selling one here.. which is pretty rear

I had a full inspection done on the car before I got it, i'v had no problems with the car at all so far, came with 43,000miles and it was cheaper then that GSX posted

That GSX is a rip off tho, the 96,000km are most likely in miles aswell...

What always got me about this gen of eclipse was that brand-new these cars were a rip-off in my opinion...they were $42,000 (loaded V6) and the dealership next door (infinity) was selling the G35 for that much. Just about every $42,000 car out there would give you more for your money. You could also pick up an acua TL for $42,000. Both of which, IMO, are significantly better cars, and better performing - although they are not 2 door convertibles, so it depends on how bad you want that I guess. The eclipse is heavy and FWD as others said before as well.

I do however like the way they look in general, and you should be able to pick one up these days for fairly cheap as they depreciate pretty quick. I thought you could get it with the V6 any year they made them in Canada? I didn't know they only did that in the states until recently. Really the only thing that matters is if you like the car, and like how it drives.

I like the 2nd gen body styles the best. I think the change in styling after that body style caused popularity or those cars to plummet.

Uhh... you're dead wrong.

Mitsu sold way more 3Gs than 2Gs. Less than 5% of 2Gs had the AWD Turbo option by the end of production. That's why they changed them. They weren't selling any.

OK I stand corrected. I don't see any 3Gs on the streets though... Their styling just doesn't do it for me either.

Look for 'em. You'll see them.

Keep in mind that Mitsu has only been in Canada for like 4 years or so too.

Mitsubishi has only been in Canada for three-four years so obviously you won't see that many here & Canada is not a good reflection of US sales which are completely different. The best selling year ever for the Eclipse was the first year of the 3G's which is surprising considering how the 2G's looked so much better but the US market is strange in that the best cars aren't always the best sellers hence the high Mustang sales. A competent car like the RSX has done well in Canada but was outsold by a canyon-size margin in the US by the 3G Eclipse. You see more Eclipses than Integras, RSX's, 240's, Celica's, & Preludes combined in the US. The Eclipse has outsold all it's competition since being released in the early 90's which is why it's the only one still in the market for better (1G & 2G) or for worse (3G).

Edit: I don't hate the 3G Eclipse as it's a reliable, competent vehicle especially with the V6 but the styling is so hit & miss. Sometimes I see them and think "wow. that's a nice looking car." & other times it makes me miss the beautiful 2G styling.
