Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new computer and the deal from bcom sounds pretty good. Just asking for advice on which combo is better:

AMD

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4200+ AM2 Processor
ASUS M2NPV-VM nVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430
nVIDIA GeForce 6 Graphics (Integrated on Motherboard)
ADI AD1986A Audio Codec (Integrated on Motherboard)

Intel

Dual-core Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz Processor (800MHz FSB)
Intel D945GTPL LGA775 Motherboard
Intel GMA 950 Onboard Graphics Subsystem
Intel High Definition Audio Subsystem (Integrated on Motherboard)

Both will cost around 1000$ w/ 320gb hd / 1 gig ram / dvdrw / 20.1" lcd

I'll be used mostly for basic things like listening to music, watching movies, doing schoolwork.

So yeah which ones better or should I just try and build my own system w/ that kind of budget?

For the stuff you're going to be doing with it, you could do with a AMD 2200+ for $50 and get the same peformance. You don't need those parts unless you're going to be doing heavy gaming or multithreading/coding/compiling.

what he said. Both those systems are overkill for what your going to be using

but if your going to be gaming make sure you get a video card along with those systems...integrated video cards are weak.

Well I do a lot of video editing too, and my system right now (amd 2800+ / 512 ram) cannot take it...

Antec Sonata 2 w/PSU
Core 2 E6300
MSI 975X Platinum
LG DVD burner
2X512 Mushkin EM2-6400 or equivalent
nVidia 6800 series or ATI equivalent
Seagate 80gig

MemEx price to build: around $995 + labour/tax, and they're local.

You're also missing the large hard drive he'll need for video editing and the monitor.

Benchmark wise for general application usage, those two should be pretty close. I would give no preference for either, and it's up to you, you should be happy with both.

You're right. I cut some corners to make $1k. LCD's are cheap, HDD's are cheap. To each his own, but I'd spend the majority of my money on the core operational hardware. I'd bet he already has a monitor, and at least one hard drive.

I just threw in my 2 cents, I'm not here to make any definitive statements.
