Those are some of the worst MS paint maps I have ever seen.

Going west on 16th ave from the west side of deerfoot the bridge into Renfrew(8th st) is always faster then 16th ave. Then you can go south on St. Georges Drive or keep going east on one of the back roads over to center or whatever.
Saves huge time.

And the drive home from Glenmore and Mcleoud I always take Glenmore WB and go off on 18th st s.e N to lynnwood and either take ogden road or 50th ave up to or keep going on ogden road to portland street up over the zoo bridge and onto memorial or St. Georges if it is slow, besides that I guess I just try to stay out of thick traffic. Even in the middle of rush hour I can get home in 25-30 minutes.

Why would you take a shortcut all the way through a back alley? That isn't exactly going to be much faster especially because the max in allies is 15km/h and after every block you have to wait until its clear to get across the road to the other block of alley.

53st NW usually gets backed-up in the North bound direction when Crowchild Tr. is already screwed up. Shaganappi Trail is also screwed up at this time. Everyone piles onto 53st nw and backs it up about 10 minutes.

They're deadly around here. Dips, potholes, debris. I live on 17th and taking a shortcut through the alley's will just slow you down even more stopping for every street, crackhead, drunk girls, etc. It's better to take 15th Ave and skip all of the red mile traffic, while leaving your car intact.

No offence, but I'm not telling anyone my short cuts. Once they get out, they are no longer short, a handful of people who know them turn into a large # of people pretty quickly.

Besides, I don't think anyone else has a hover-mustang that can ride the rivers like mine :D

You will no longer be able to use COP as a short cut to Cougar ridge etc.... They say they are closing off access.

Yep this is my short cut also! Most of my short cuts usually involve being an ass and cutting people off.

I use to work there and they have been saying that for years, when I was there they enforced it with 2 booths that checked passes at the top and bottom.

The 'shortcut' up 20th street if you get stuck on Crowchild will only be good for 1 more winter. We are going to take it out next spring and its not going to be open. So to those of you golfing at Earl Grey golf course are going to have to take the long way out.

BTW its the first photograph in the thread.

I used to live on 10A St SW close to here and I HATED the homos that would use that back alley as a shortcut. They would cross the the streets without looking and I almost got broadsided by a number of them.

IMO Anyone using a residential area or a backalley as a shortcut should be kicked in the nuts.

Except for the fact that most of the section down Dalhousie Dr is a playground zone and cops ALWAYS sit at Dalhousie and Dalton Dr picking people off.

My friends used to live in the townhouses on Dalton and we saw them there ALL of the time.

Next spring it will be gone for good. Only a walking path and a sound wall. There are going to be a lot of ticked off people when we close it.

Yeah, that's a good one, but sometimes they have cops waiting for you. And the cop will be just standing there, no car or bike (or he's parked it out fo the way). Last time he got 3 guys.

I usually go down to the IGA parking lot and do the U-turn there. I save 5-10 minutes easily when it's backed up. Which seems to be all the time now that there's construction on Glenmore.

where are you guys comming from and what is it your doing, I sat there one day and watched, there must have been 5 people a minute comming in and doin u'ees in the parking lot.. But why? goign to 14th st? and avoiding the flyover?

Seanith

Coming south on crowchild then going east on glenmore... up on that overpass thing traffic gets backed up pretty bad. If you to a U in lakeview you can avoid going up and around.

 I always see people pull u-turns there, when theres a cop standing on the side of the road just waiting for that to happen....they give so many tickets from that. It's even funnier when the people do it at the no u-turn sign right infront of them. Go past the first set of lights and do a u-turn in the opening where people go through when they turn left from the IGA parking lot, that's legal.

I find myself using this quite often. It actually goes further south, all the way down to Anderson. Also, There's been some construction work on Bonaventure lately so avoid that side.

I find the only really bad intersection on Mcleod trail is Southland Dr... which is easy to avoid.

@ Glenmore just be in the far right lane and cut in just before the intersection and get all the way into the left lane.

@ Hertiage, doesnt matter cause you just beat the lights at Glenmore.

Couple days where i can get home in 20-30 minutes in rush hour (downtown to deep deep south east)

I have taken that road a few times. I wouldn't take it if your car is lowered or on 17" rims or you have a new windshield. It's a gravel road that's pretty rough at best. I wouldn't want to break down in there either. Might help if you're Asian though, I think they mistook me for one of their own and waved at me as they pass.

The Lakeview shortcut works good too going east on Glenmore. If Glenmore is backed up to 37th St, I cut south on 37th and through Lakeview to get to that exit by the golf course.

I wouldn't voluntary take any alley south of 17th ave. They are narrow, huge potholes, and often flood during heavy rain. Also, if there is any construction/road crew etc, they're pretty much blocked off without much notice.

I have some secret shortcuts, even though it seems people know them..they still shave time off my drive :) Part of involves knowing which lane to be in and when to cut people off. haha

The cop one is no good, i know i work there and its my job to tell minions to block off the road and boot out shortcutters. :whipped: Its not a very good road for traffic anyway, to many dumbasses on bikes, plus speedbumps and me! On a side note if that is from google maps you can see my car in the parking lot:bigpimp:

Well, a thread bumped for a short cut that won't exist very soon because of Barlow Trail's upcoming closure and for most people, bouncing through a ditch or rough dirt trail isn't really a viable shortcut.

All one has to do is just look at a map of the city and a variety of "paved" shortcuts can easily be seen. 26th Street SE north or south bound to avoid Deerfoot messes - ya just got to know the in's and outs in the Southview/Radisson Heights areas. 8th Avenue NE over Deerfoot from Mayland Heights into Renfrew. 6th Street NE from 32 to 8th Avenue NE. Macleod Trail northbound from the deep south through downtown and up Centre Street when Deerfoot is not moving. Using the 16th Avenue NE flyover as opposed to Deerfoot during those ever existent northbound afternoon slowdowns - but pay real close attention to traffic flow on Deerfoot, sometimes the dual 16th Avenue lights can kill this one.

Even being in the "appropriate" lane on Deerfoot especially in the northbound lanes in the afternoon mess can make a huge difference, stay in the left between Anderson and Glenmore, get over to the right around Calf Robe, back again to the left side after Peigan and then back to the right lane after Memorial - after doing Deerfoot northbound in the afternoons for over 3 years, it becomes quite apparent to an attentive driver which lanes move better at different points along the way.

When heading out to Medicine Hat or beyond, take 22x if you live in the south of the city. It eventually spits you out just past Gleichen, yet it'll save you 30mins of taking glenmore or 16th ave.

Unfortunately you have to drive partly through a native reserve a ways past Carseland. :dunno:
