Hey guys i was thinking about making a career move and one idea which i have always thought of was a police officer. Any input on this? good or bad career? What is involved with becoming one? i think the main thing holding me back is how dangerious is it really? i dont feel like getting shot haha. Anyways any input that would help me make a choice one way or another would be great. thanks!

just dont do it for the money. i looked into it a while back and it is alot of work to get in (about a year of training if you are accepted, although that is paid for). and then their is the lie detector :bullshit: :thumbsdow

anyways, if its your calling you could at least give it a shot. worst case, you just go and do something else:dunno:

oh, and the only cops that get shot usually are the ones that think they get paid enough to not walk away in a dangerous situation. Doesn't pay enough to walk into an crack house in forest lawn without back-up.

If it's a serious career choice for you then it doesn't matter what others think. However, if you are wanting to do it for the power trip and not actually out of a genuine interest in policing then don't bother, nobody needs you.

There's enough ticket book riding, baton twirling pricks out there that don't do any good for the city they "serve" or for the police service they work for. If you're gonna be a cop do it for the right reasons and be a good one.

teggypimp95
08-23-2006, 04:08 PM
Yeah i wouldent be a dick, iv always been interested in the police force and crime investigation etc. Just needs to know what it takes, how dangerious it actully is, and if its worth it. What is the money like?

If you're serious, check out www.calgarypolice.ca and read their recruiting section. A copy of the application and polygraph examination are on there. And yes, they do care about what you have done. If you have a history of violence, hard drugs, thefts, gang activity or affiliation, you likely will not get hired.

Just be honest and truthful and you'll do alright. But I would speak to some police officers before applying. After volunteering with CPS for over a year, I made the decision that policing wouldn't be for me and I am now focusing on the fire department and operating my own business.

Cheers

i applied last year...passed everything...but at the end i was deffered for two years bec i didn't have enough "volunteer experience" and they have concern about my "physical attribute"
which i think is BS. i was told by my File manager to hire a personal trainer-i did- then they still deffered me without further testing...
this is how the application starts(i think - i might miss some)
download the application form...a lot of questions...pretty much your entire life. they look for patterns of behaviour...
ncluded in this application is the PARE test...physical stuff...u can take it at UofC or Red Deer College (good for 6 months),vision etc..then the written exam...(i got like 99 out of 110 questions...) then a pre-panel interview with your File manager...then the panel interview(i heard this is the hardest to pass) then the Truth verifier test(lie detector) then some wierd test i don't remember the name but it consists of three exams...the first is like ~500 questions... its easy but loooonnnggg.then after that you get finger printed etc...i did all this...it took like a year ...this means i had to take the PARE test twice(the only physical test they gave me and i passed it twice...)
and about the volunteer experience ...i went to school(mt royal then uofc computer science major) with a full and a part time job.how can i fit volunteering in that schedule? my study time was from 1am to 4 am... plus nobody mentioned that i need volunteer work when i submitted my application, the prepanel interview and the actual panel interview ...soo ooo my advice don't waste your time... i'm still bitter about the whole thing! when i got the letter i remember my entire body was sore from working out etc... then i got deffered ...:whipped:

jmeriel
08-23-2006, 05:23 PM
if you do decide to apply ...(i still think its a honourable job)i find that Red Deer College PARE test is easier...the written exam is very detailed...30 minutes to read a booklet...then you get questions like(memory recall) the badge number of your Sgt, license plate number of a car that was reported stolen...and don't be a smart ass...don't just remember the first three letters bec the choices are almost the same except for 1 letter or number...the panel interview is easy(i think) just make sure you are prepared...they pretty much ask you the same questions in the website...you just have to worry about followup question...and get used to talking while ppl are wrting! yes everytime you say something they write...ohhh and during my interview one of the Inspectors' cell phone rang...i found later on that they sometimes do that to c if u get distracted...with the PARE test...i trained by running back and fort on a tennis court jumping over the net for 4 minutes without getting tires ...you'll be fine!

The main thing for the pare is running. Honestly, anyone with average strength can do the strength part. I did it and only weighed 135lbs (this was back when I was 19). As long as you are a good middle distance runner the pare is a joke.

Then I got put on the backburner for 2 years cause they didn't like my background check (weed). After 2 years of waiting I said screw it and went back to university.

I think they are much more lenient with weed nowadays but like one of the previous posts said, not the hardcore stuff.

My best friend is a cop and he really likes his job. There is always some danger since you are dealing with alot of idiots, but working as a team helps out things considerably. I suggest going for a "ride along" if you haven't already, this is where you ride shotgun in a police car for a night to experience what goes on during a shift. I have done this and it is the best way to see what you are getting into. Try and do a night shift, as naturally that is when the "interesting" stuff happens. Good luck.

I wonder how much the popo gets paid at entry level:confused:

maplelodge
08-24-2006, 05:54 PM
The reason why they want to see you volutneer is becase CPS is all about community policing. They want to see you give back to the community. Oh plase don't volunteer 2 weeks prior to sending your application in. Thats worse than not volunteering at all.

Ride alongs are fun and great way to see what its like. My ride along night was quiet and we only took like 5 calls, and did 1 t-stop but I enjoyed every minute of it. Gonna apply and do a few more in different districts.

As for the entry level pay, go to www.calgarypolice.ca

PS: You will not go rich from wearing that uniform.

If you are serious into this, start volunteering, do ride alongs, talk to some officers, attend their recruit information night. Right now its a very good time to apply as they are crying for qualified candidates.

Best of luck if you are going to apply!

i took the course at lethbridge college. It was a really good course. did i end up as a cop.... nope i need to have my eyes done ( laser surgery) before i can continue my applications they said. In the mean time i got a job as a correctional worker and that was 5 years ago now i have been working here.

For the police i was always told calgary wants people with perfect past and volunteer work where as edmonton want perfect physical specimens. Edmontons physical entrance standards are insane, last time i checked they even said you could only have a certain percent of body fat.

As for the job in general you have to think about all the possible situations and whether you could handle them and leave the job at work and not bring it home with you. if you saw your partner getting shot would you just freeze up or could you stay calm and handle the situation? if you had to go and tell some parents that their child got killed in an accident, could you deal with that. As a cop you will see people in the worst time of their lives usually. Everyday you will have to deal with negative things happening around you.

If it is for you I say go for it, i am sure it will have it's very rewarding days as well as bad ones. Just whatever you do, don't become a correctional officer, no sense of accomplishment, or sense of a job well done here. Just decent pay and very little to do usually.

Seems decent although the max of 70K seems a little limiting, but of course i realize you wouldn't do this just for the money. Pretty fast growth to 70K though.

Remember though shift differential, overtime, court time etc. Most officers I know are making 85-100K a year.

What about physical size wise...almost 90% of the cops I've seen are huge...either built or just look big....do you think hieght and wieght would play a major factor or would they just tell you to bulk up.

I'm 5'8 and 150, and am workin towards my goal of 175, but in comparison to the the current officers I've seen I dont think I'd be close.:dunno:

Doesn't even factor into it anymore. Just pass either the PARE, POPAT or any other required physical testing and you will be fine. Policing is now more academically challenging and emphasis is placed on community policing and using your verbal skills rather than physical attributes.

from some applicants and officers I talked to, age is not a matter but life experience does....... and a lot of people I talked to get deferred because of this or lack of volunteering....... the life experience part is what I am worried the most right now >.<

In Calgary when the city was no growing so fast, they were big on getting a four-year degree first. I know someone who got the four-year degree (in something related to criminology), passed the physical, and got deferred. About four years later, after managing a fast-food restaurant, he went back, passed the physical again, when through the really long interview process, including the lie detector test, and then got in. By this time he was married, had two kids, and about 32 years old, so perhaps they decided he had enough life experience.

Also, apparently at the end of the lie-detector interview, the interviewer will know more about you than your wife or long-term girlfriend.

There needs to be a poll.

if you look @ CPS's website, they hve a preferred qualifications section... which its 2 yrs of post secondary........ but I've heard they have hired as young as 19 yrs old as well..... so it all comes down to how "rounded" you are and how well you present urself in the interviews and pass all the hoops in the hiring process..... you should attend the information session or vist job fairs... i believe they go to Mount Royal for it..... and talk to other officers to get advise..... best of luck to u if u plan to apply....

Now that i think about it, aren't u the guy that works at platinum detailing?

I hope not, cause when u talk to customers that paid $160.00 for a detail job that was sub-par like that, i don't see any repeat business happening. especially not for a bmw now. My interior roof wasn't cleaned at all, inside door handles not touched, wax streaks all over the outside of the car.
