Ohhh what a hiden gem along Center Street. Modern decor, open kitchen, very friendly staff, great sushi and noodles. Shikiji serves everything you'll find in a typical sushi joint but it's the first I've been to that serves cold soba noodles. Very refreshing, light, healthy, and different than what I'm normally accustomed to. The GF ordered the Shikiji soba (cold), I ordered the Nabeyaki udon (hot), along with some california rolls and sushi pieces. No drinks, no desserts, and a 20% tip, our bill came to $52.

Shikiji is a great place! Good review too, they have something for everyone including cooked lunch trays for those who don't like Sushi.

Shikiji is awesome, especially if the owner is working the night you are there. He will give you humongous portions of fish for your sushi.

Quoted For Emphasis. Their smoked salmon sushi is unreal, and when combined with extra big portions...

Oh yeah, they also serve cold soba noodle dishes at Wa's and Soba Ten but the Shikiji ones are the best IMO.

Very good restaurant! I went there again for dinner yesterday and had the Miso Ramen...I brought back most of it (the portions are HUGE) for the BF to eat, but the soup base was all sucked into the noodles lol. I really like how they have all the condiments set out on the tables too..those roasted garlic chips are addicting! haha!

The sushi is tasty, but I prefer the sushi rice over at Wa's. The Nabeyaki Udon is delish though!

shikiji is pretty good, wish their prices were a little more student friendly...they need more variety for their ramen too!

just went to shikiji again
again, nothing special, but try not to order sushi because on two separate occasions, it arrived 30 minutes after i ordered (it was quite busy tho), at which my dinner partners have already finished their noodles

If you guys haven't been there in a while, you might be in for a rude awakening as far as prices are concerned. They had a huge price hike a while back and I haven't been back since.

Yikes I thought they were already on the higher side

Yup. Prices went up almost 20% if I remember correctly.

I used to like their gyoza but there's no way I'm paying over a dollar for each piece.

These days, I'll usually skip Shikiji and take the extra 30 second drive to Wa's unless I'm in the mood for ramen.

Yup, prices have gone up considerably there. I still go there at least once or twice a week, as it's probably still the best place in Calgary in my opinion.

This is my biggest complaint with their service. They don't quite understand that a table of 2 or more would like to normally eat at the same time. They almost always send one dish and then another 10-20 mins later.

I haven't been to Shikiji in awhile. Prices up 20%? That's pretty substantial. Just drive up the street and check out at Wa's. So good.

Good find Max, are they comparable to sushi places in Richmond BC? (went to this little place across from Crystal Mall, it was good)

Good sushi, noodles, & bento boxes. However, the chicken/beef teriyaki meat they put in their bento box & don (rice bowls) are pretty gross. It's like food you would serve to your dog.

No complaints other than the chicken/beef teriyaki.

Went there last week. Service was good. The sushi was good but the noodles and rice bowls were only okay. Couple that and their high prices would make them expensive for the value. I'd say if you wanted to go for sushi, it's not a bad deal but if you wanted noodles, stick to Chinese or Vietnamese.

I went there last night with a fellow Japanese dude who was visiting from Toronto. He just came back from Sapporo a few weeks ago (which is an area of Japan popular with ramen) and was curious about the ramen at Shikiji.

He concluded that the ramen wasn't too bad - perhaps one of the better places in Canada. Of course he was surprised at the prices since ramen is supposed to be an "economy meal" but I explained to him that everything in Calgary was expensive.

On the other hand, my usual fare (katsu curry) was pretty disappointing. The katsu was overdone to the point where the curry was unable to salvage the taste.

That was the last straw for me. Combined with the price increase, I think I'll stay away for Shikiji unless one of my Japanese friends goes through a serious case of ramen withdrawal.

The Eel is pretty good there but some of their sushi is made really sloppy. I had spicy tuna rolls and they didn't look anything like they are supposed to lol
