Is there a downside to putting a narrower tire on a slightly wider rim?

For example, the tires are from an 18x8 rim. The rims I want to get are 18x8.5. I know I could just buck up and buy tires that actually fit, but I also know that the tire can be stretched out to fit the rim. I just want to know what the cons of doing this would be.

No cons really...but you get the streched Euro look...also the edge of your rim will now have less protection from any potenial curbage mang...Also the ride will be a lil harsher...

like ek said, no real cons only curbs will be your new worst enemy if you go too crazy streched...

but it looks soo damn pimp tho :bigpimp:

what about a more narrow rim?

For example, the 8" tires, on a 7.5" rim?

Stretched tires also result in less sidewall rollover for improved handling.

Opposite effect basically. My jeep has 12.5 inch wide tires, but only 9 inch wide tires. Great for offroading, and lots of sidewall movement which makes them perform nice when i air down for trails. Haha, but thats on a jeep. On a car im sure it doesnt have any positive effects, only negetive.
