Is that for real? I might rather have the 2.8 except for the F4's light weight, and ability to IS pan w/ this one.

Nice looking lens, bit on the pricey side, though. Nothing really groundbreaking, IMO. You guys need an 18-200L IS USM, that would be awesome.
But, uh... $1600 for a 50mm? I don't care if it's F1.2, that's ridiculous.

It is L glass.... so I am sure alot of the cost comes from that.... and Canon doesn't have a 50mm L lens that I am aware (atleast not recently)... :dunno:
I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes.. :nut:

Canon still makes the 50mm F1.8 and F1.4, which I have. It's just ok.

But they don't have an L version of the 50 (until now of course).... IIRC there is an old f/1.2 but even it wasn't L.... So I think that is there big selling feature... LOTS of people have wanted one, now they got it, lets see if they buy...

They had a 50 f/1.0L before.
I thought $330 for 0.4 fstop advantage was hard to swallow, $1200+ for a 0.2 fstop advantage is even worse.

Yeah, Canon had the 50mm F1.0L USM ($2,700), and Nikon had the MF 85mm F1.0 Repro-Nikkor as their super low-light lenses.

Canon once had an f/0.95 lens too. Ferrand had a f/0.87. :nut:

heard about those. Don't understand how a lens can actually create light though.

all it means is that the diametre is larger than it's length... it doesn't create light or make a scene brighter than it actually is.
50mm F1.0L was my dream lens ..
However .. it was $4,000 .. I couldn't afford it when I was 16 ... of course,.
Even now, once a while, will see the 50mm F1.0L on ebay for $3K US ..
This 50mm F1.2L seems like a bargain .. and it will be under $2k Cad!

You don't have to be rich, you just have to be really good at convincing yourself you need it and can afford it!

compared to the f/1.0, yes. but hopefully it will be tack sharp like the 85L wide open.. otherwise, it's useless. we'll see how it goes.
