Is it normal for the 18-135 kit to be cheaper than the 18-70 kit? I expected the 18-135 kit to have more range so should be a bit more expensive than the other kit.

That is strange to me as well. I wonder if the distortions at 18mm for the 18-135 is worse than the 18-70? Is the 18-70 faster at the telephoto end than the 18-135 at 70mm?

The 18-70mm lens can be had for $400ish, so the kit is not a good deal at all.

I'm not a Nikon, but isn't the G series lenses a cheaper lense anyways?? Hence why the 18-135mm is less.

Nope, that's not it. Officially the 18-70mm is called the , "AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED" versus the 18-135mm, "AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED"

Basically all the "G" means is that the lens itself does not have a aperture ring and the aperture settings are controlled by the camera.

The reason the 18-70 is more expensive is due to the amount of ED glass used. The 18-135 has one piece of ED glass where the 18-70 has 3. It will be better for reducing chromatic aberations. And the quality will be slightly better.

Rumor has it the 18-135 isn't built as well as the 18-70, but all we can do is wait and see.

the 18-70 is also faster at max aperature. The 18-135 probably hits f5.6 around 70mm making it a full stop slower relative to the 18-70 at that focal length.

I'm reading similar thoughts on the 18-135; not a good lens compare to the 18-70. Wish there was some real test on it to get some "offical" verdict. The range is what i'm after, but if the len suck then it'll be the 18-70. Should be able to find some of those second hand, right?
