I'm looking to buy a new camera and I'm trying to decide between the Canon SD700 and the A700.

I'm primarily concerned with image quality. If I'm not imagining things, I've noticed that the A700's pictures always seem to come out sharper than the SD700's.

Can any of the Beyond photo experts comment? Which one will take higher quality images?

The 700is has the 'image stabilizer' in it, personally that made my decision :). As for the quality of the image it should be the exact same or better with the SD700is. It uses the esact same lens, might not zoom out as far but its the same thing :dunno:

my pic, go with the SD700is.

You could also consider the Panasonic FZ5. It's very much like the A700, 6mp, 6X zoom, 2.5 inch screen and uses 2 AA batteries. The major advantage for the panasonic is like the SD700 IS, the FZ5 also has an image stabilizer.

If you want a camera with a better zoom, FZ5. If you liked the A700 because of the possibility for creative control, then down the zoom to the A620 or A540. Or shell out the big bucks for the S3 IS.

Small cameras is another story

I have the SD700, and the image stabilization is amazing. I took this pic in the vertical only IS mode.

Make sure you click the image, then click the lower right corner of the image to "full size" it so IE doesn't stretch it.

SD memory is ultra cheap right now. That would be a deciding factor for me.

That's what the "is" part of S3-IS stands for... Image Stabilization. ;)

Soooo many new models coming out... can't keep track of them

If you're looking for a 6x zoom with manual control options, well Canon now announced their A710 IS to replace the A700 which had no image stabilizer.

The high powered S3-IS now has a new challenger, Panasonic's FZ-50 is out. Even thou the S3 is priced at $580, the FZ-50 is gonna be around $700 or $800, it's gonna have a butt load more features.

SD800 IS has some cool things that i would like, wide angle 28mm, don't care much for the 7MP, same IS as the 700IS, BUT COMMON!!! DiGiC lll!!!!

SD900 is just 10mp and DiGiC lll nothing too special

BTW Canon, Why the hell didn't you put DiGic lll on the XTi?.

because at 3FPS and 10MP, the data pipeline doesn't even come close to hitting the ceiling with DIGIC II.
