View Full Version : Ugliest Dash I have Ever Seen

I was reading this month's car and driver comparison test on SUV's and came across this dash in the new 2007 Lincoln Navigator....it may appeal to some, but to me, it is the ugliest thing to ever be put in a vehicle. The instrument cluster looks to be 50 years old. It also looks very out of place in the interior. I have attached a picture of it - the best one I could find - it looks signficantly worse if you could see it closer up. For interest's sake, if anyone is wondering what else was in the comparison this month and doesn't want to go buy a C&D:

1st place: Mercedes GL550
2nd Place: Audi Q7
3rd Place: Nissan Q56
4th Place: Cadillac Escalade
5th Place: Lincoln Navigator

That's pretty... interesting....
(interesting = nasty... :barf: )

It appeals in a nostalgic kind of way... and going completely old school would of been nice... but the modern and old clash horribly.

Yup I agree, it is the clash between modern and old that amplifies it's nastiness. There is also huge gaps between the already sparce speedometer labels, which makes it look even worse. I wish I could of found a closer up pic, it looks considerably worse than what my little picture shows.

I'm sure Lincoln would be devastated to know that it’s dash design is receiving horrible reviews from it’s main market….teenagers on the internet.

It's one version of the interior out of a few options, and it's probably the one marketed towards the older crowd.

I think the Lincoln is nice....

We had a guy at CMS who bought a 2006 Civic Si... Now that's a f*cking ugly dashboard! He'd get so pissed when I told him how gay it was  If anyone @ CMS is reading this, tell Bronc that tabouli thinks his dashboard sucks :D

The current Civic is still ugliest dash I've ever seen (so ugly it would keep me from owning one) but I seriously question management at Lincoln for green lighting that hideous 1960's gauge cluster. I understand the nostalgia thing but the whole idea of a gauge cluster is to provide information & I've seen the close up pic in the magazine and the tach & speedometer are barely legible with the solid needle and thin lines. It's management like this that makes it so easy to see how Ford is losing millions.

There have been alot of decent dash layouts over the years and most new ones seem to be pretty good in that the stereo is mounted above the HVAC controls which is the way it should be. I'm for function over style so my personal favorite is the no-nonsense dash of the 1988-1991 CRX Si.

In this colour scheme the dash doesn't look all that bad. But do you notice that the gauges are not shown in these shots at all? The gauges look like late-70's early-80's Ford LTD/Crown Vic/Grand Marquis stuff.

As for the best looking (well, at least functional) dash, how about the S13 or NSX dashes? Nice and legible gauges (except for the electronic cluster on some S13s), all the controls close by, and they don't look that dated at all. I just love how the centre console slopes down.

:werd: Simple IS better. Only problem with the CRX is that there were no pockets to put stuff into. And no cupholders either. A bit too simple for me.

I'm getting to be a huge fan of the 96-98 civics. It's simple, there's a spot just the right size for a cell phone on the dash, plus there's a nice pocket and cupholders near the shifter.

I think it's because they're electro-luminesient (sp?) and that they only show if the car is on.

I love the guages from my car, but not the dash (looks dated in my opinion). But honestly, what was Lincoln thinking?

When I started this thread, I should if said Instrument Cluster....I really didn't mean the WHOLE dash was ugly, but mostly the instrument cluster made everything else look bad. In those pictures posted about half way down the thread, it only looks OK because you can't see the monstrosity that is the instrument cluster IMO.

As for the best interiors topic, every car magazine I've ever read agrees that Audi has the best interiors, and I would have to agree as well. Highest quality switch gear, everything feels perfect, and it all looks really nice. That RS4 interior is fantastic as well.

Before I bought my Accord I was actually looking at the Civic. I even thought the interior look great from the pictures online and was excited to see it in person. However that all changed once I test drove it a couple of times. I would have bought the Civic if it had a dash layout similar to the Accord of the previous generation Civic.

Here are some issues I personally had with it.

- The steering wheel has to be set in a fixed position to be able to see your speed AND tach. Any movement up or down and you lose your view of one or the other. The steering wheel movement should be for view but also comfort.

- I found that in order to glance at the tach or the other guages I had to move my eyes completely off the road.

- I found that the speedo position to be VERY distracting overall. I would hate to drive for any length of time in the dark with the speedo illumiated in my field of vision the entire time.

- The controls on the lower left are quite hard to get at. I found them too low and sunken in.

- The radio/climate control buttons are too small and not tactile enough. You pretty much have to take your eyes off the road to do anything with them.

- The CD slot is a pretty long reach from the drivers seat.

- The center console is VERY plasticy and the Civic I test drove wasnt that "sturdy". It felt like I could break it with one hand.

The cyclops dash sucks plain & simple. Fortunately other manufactures aren't following suit and coming out with their version of this eyesore. It's ugly in pictures and uglier in person. It's a gimmick dash like the ones Toyota & Saturn have placing the instruments in the center of the dash which is un-natural not to mention ridiculous looking.:thumbsdow

I have that C and D, i think the dash looks brutal. SOmetimes, there is a reason why certain designs are put to bed, here is a prime example. I think the rest of the interior is cool, but then the instruments ruin it.
