Look fat in pictures? Camera adding ten pounds? Well, worry no more! Select HP cameras now have a "slimming" feature so that everyone you take pictures of can pretend they look better than they do! Jubilation!

http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/tours/slimming/index_f.html

I seriously thought this was some sort of joke at first.

looking at that demonstration, you could go + or -, so it could also be a fattening feature

Wow, but did you look carefully at the trees behind the pictures with the comparision at the beginning. You could see that there is a distortion applied and the trees are bent slightly.

If you want to look slimmer than just stand next to a fat person when you have a photograph taken of you. :D

it compresses the centered subjects, so it will bend the background a bit but not noticeable unless you look really hard.

-1 for fat people being lazy :thumbsdow

instead of buying a big mac, buy something a little healthier.

They would no longer have to hire skinny girls. Hire a fat chick, and use a special camera.

Haha, this is a new way to get rid of pesky girls. Send them a pic of you and say this is "10 weeks old"... Then send a pic of you with the fattening technology. Add some sweat marks on photoshop and your done.

But seriously, if they fine-tune this right, I bet they can make even the ugliest people look good. Internet dating as we know it, is OVER with. You may be e-macking on someone that looks like a skinny little peice of jailbate and it turns out to be rossie o donnale'.

it's getting really sad the way that digital camera's are changing photography... skill and knowledge is getting thrown out the window for gadgets and gizmos

I agree, digital photography has made getting a good shot a bit easier, and it's given photographers more control over their images, but there are certain fundamentals that never change.

:werd: The major change is that people can shoot a lot more shots to get that perfect picture. I was reading that a wedding photographer when from shooting a couple of rolls of film to 5000+ shots in a wedding weekend. I'm sure that the shots turned out as good but digital allows for bigger mistakes to be made and photos are recoverable.

And THAT is what's wrong with digital photography now. Because memory is cheap and reusable, it gives people an excuse to be sloppy because it costs them nothing. There's nothing more annoying than hearing someone say "I shot 5000 frames the other day" but only having 2 good shots to show for it. Or worse "I'll just photoshop it after". For a lot of people, "that perfect picture" is the same as "that lucky picture" which required no skill to get anyways. What ever happen to shooting like 10 frames and getting 10 good shots?

Don't get me wrong, it really doesn't matter what medium the photography is done in. But for most people it's too inconvenient to learn even the simple basics of photography cause it's easier to just fix up a shit picture in photoshop and try to pass it off as a masterpiece.

I completely agree with Obscura.

I agree on most points, but I don't see the onslaught of digital imaging as the death of photography. It's changed the way we think about the imaging proces, with post-processing playing a much heavier part. That might sound bad, but remember that digital is limited to one digital sensor, with relatively poor dynamic range. To emulate films such as Kodakchrome or Tri-X, we need to use photoshop. It's like exchanging the ability to change film type for the ability to alter the image afterwards.

That being said, you're spot on about the taking lazy photos bit. Let me put it this way - when I got my DSLR, I got a 1GB card. I ran it out of space many a time with subpar shots, so I got another 2GB card. Now that I've improved somewhat, I never even need the 2GB card anymore - it hasn't been out of my PDA in months. The only time I needed it in recent memory was when I shot that 4500+ frame stop-motion video! So, yes, beginners and those unwilling to learn will take advantage of the reuseable space, but I consider it to be a step on the learning path. Some will get better, and others will continue to take a million shots and wonder why they never look as good as the ones they see from people willing to take the time to master their craft.

In photography, quanity has rarely, if ever, outweighed quality.

Wow, when I read the title I thought it was a joke too... I guess not.
I love how in their examples, the women they slim down are types that don't even need it in the first place. Not everybody likes a kate moss figure...
