I want to import a vehicle to Calgary from Seatle. Its around 20K US.

I read a lot of threads about Searail and Hansens. Is there any other companies people can recommend?

Does anyone know how much taxes I ll have to pay to get it over here? What if its sent as a gift (the car belongs to my uncle).

Can anyone tell me a ball park price and time to ship?

Thanks your help will be much appreciated.

Gift or not, you pay tax and duty.

Duty is 6.1% if it is not manufactured in North America, no duty if it is North American made.

6% GST on price + duty
$100 Excise tax if it has A/C

$195 + GST for RIV fee.

Why don't you call Hansons and Searail and find out what a ballpark shipping time is? Or do it yourself, save a few hundred bucks and spend a day or 2 driving through some of the nicest scenery the Rockies have to offer.

I just dont have time to drive it up. And they are closed and i need to know asap.

$1220 (duty) + 100 (excise) + 195 (RIV)

So around $1515 on taxes all together.

btw does Mercedes cars count as being manufactured in NA?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Don't forget GST will make it just over $1600

I'm going to say no, but check the first numbers of the VIN, this will tell you country of manufacture. 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 as a first number are manufactured in NA.

I am going to guess that your Mercedes will have a VIN starting with "S" - meaning it was manufactured in Germany.

You will pay more taxes than just this. You will pay (assuming car value is exactly 20K) 1220 for duty and then 6% tax on 21200. 6% on 21200 is 1272.

$1220+$1272=~$2500 in tax. That does not include the A/C fee or RIV fee.

I would say Hansons ~3-4 weeks (if you can reserve a spot right now) and searail ~5-6 weeks. I started to arrange shipping through hansons 2 weeks ago (thursday before labor day) and car was just picked up this afternoon. Will still be another 2 weeks before car arrives in calgary.

shipping car from Illinois. Cost me $2000. Its $200 more than searail but quicker, better insurance coverage and better customer service. IMO Hansons>searail woth the extra money. not shipping directly to my house, to do that I would need a customs broker ~150-200. hansons picked it up from seller, and will deliver it to customs warehouse in calgary. I go to warehouse, pay fees/taxes/duty and get my car!
