Just for fun. If you were to buy a JDM import (1991 or older), which one would you buy and why?

Me, I like the Toyota Supra T-TB Ltd. Nice lines, not a huge engine (2.5L), sleek,

Just for fun? Or are you gauging interest? I personally would wait for the OBD1 generation cars (the 92+ ones). An EG6 would be cool.

I thought this was about girl models. lol.

To be fair and honest, a bit of both really. Since I'm in the business, I really want to know what people are into. I read all about how some people like RX7, some like Supra, some its MR2, and then the Honda Civics, but wanted to pose the question to get out ideas.

Its funny really. In Japan, guys are buying North American and German cars and having shows and rallys with them. I guess grass is always greener on the other side.

In my bias opinion (I used to work for Honda in Tokyo), NSX are the most underrated sports car. They are awesome.

Z. ;)

But I like MR2's also cause they're so light. Dunno if I'd fit in one or not though.

for a touring car i'd get the supra (i'd say MKIV but they're not legal yet), for a track car a skyline GT-R, for looks/performance an FD (doesn't beat a GT-R on my list because of reliability), and for just a genuinely fun car i'd get a GTS-T skyline.

I would assume its a ball-less car but would be very fun to dice around in it anyway, handles quite well?

I already got an MR-2 from Japan and lovin it. I also would like a suzuki cappucino, but not money for one. These guys in the UK builds up Cappucinos, some get up to 200whp I believe. Also think they tried a Hayabusa swap.

Underrated? That's a laugh *lol* Almost every car magazine and ricer out there has drooled and raved over them for years. Overrated and over priced is more like it. I drove one and couldn't wait to get back into my 944 Turbo. The NSX is absolutely gutless. Maybe a supercharged one would be better who knows. But from the factory as they sit the car is nothing special in my opinion - at least not at $150,000 new. Maybe at $80,000 they would be consider good. For $150K I would expect something that would compete with a 911 Turbo. Maybe the new NSX won't be so dissappointing and they can manage to sell a few more than the 100 or so that they sold in it's last year.

Heh, the JZA70 supras really need more attention. It's a shame nobody has heard about them over here. You can get a powerful car (2.5L Twin Turbo inline 6, 250-280rwhp stock) that responds well to mods, has NO turbo lag, has a BULLETPROOF engine, and gets great gas milage off boost. I've yet to have a single person get out of mine, and not say "I want one".

Skyine GT-Rs are pretty cool cars as well, but they're getting pretty common these days as "the car" to import.

What about the Celica GT-4? Granted, it's basically identical to the north american Alltrac Turbos, but you're getting a cheap car with low kms, and handles great all year round, plus it's quick, and has that uniqueness about it.

I'm not up with a lot of my japanese models, but I would find some of those niche market vehicles that nobody really knows about over here. You know, like the Aristo(2JZ) or Soarer(1JZ), which have a GREAT engine base to build up the ultimate sleeper. Or like the Pulsar GTi-R. Who doesn't like an SR20 powered 4wd coupe.

Why did car mags rave over it (and still do, come to think of it)? Reliablity and civility. They didn't exist in the exotic car world until the NSX came along.

Ferrari's are what they are now because cars like the NSX forced them to up their game.

Mine's 15 and a half now, and I drive it every day. You couldn't do that with a early 90's Ferrari. Hell, you can't do that until about the F355; I'd consider that the first reliable DD Ferrari.

"Nothing special". I don't see how that works. The 91's can run a 13.7 stock, the 97's and up can run 12.9s stock. That's not slow by any standard. Special? My car, a '91 Red/Ivory, is one of 383 in existance. They're rare.

Check the NSX-R for a car you want to compete with a 911TT. Or a Gallardo, F430, etc...

You're right. The NSX WAS overpriced and over-rated.

Because none of the staff have to buy and own one
Yeah, I'd love the NSX too if I got to rip it on the track, build it with whatever parts, and have it serviced, all under my company credit card. Unfortunately, I still see 1991 and 1992 NSX's going for laughable amounts. You think it's worth it? Buy one and enjoy it  Haha There's plenty of people trying to unload them, no shortage of NSX's for sale. Nice car, too bad they aren't worth half of what people are asking for them.

Argue all you want, the miserable sales speak for themselves though.

^ Driving even a stock NSX is like no other car, the handling is in its own class i think, but buying one to garage queen.. :thumbsdow , those cars were meant for track use for sure. I'll somewhat agree on the car's sometimes outrageous 2nd hand pricing, but Honda reliability in a sports car? +1

I've never had to. I've had mine since April. Just an oil change.

Parts? Cheap.

'91s and '92s going for laughable amounts? I think a 15 year old car going for 45 grand is pretty decent resale value. Mine won't depreciate any more.

Buy one and enjoy it?

I did and I am.

The only models i think i would consider importing, in the next few years will be the Evo's , r33's, FD's or supras. The FD and mr-2 are the only cars you can get now, that don't look like they stepped out of the 80's. The next few years will see some really great imports so long as canada doesn't clamp down.
