In 1988 I saw Motle Crue in the Saddledome for their Girls Girls Girls tour. Whitesnake was the intro band and while I'm no huge fan by any means, they sounded incredibly close to their source material. I've seen alot of bands live and none have ever sounded as good live as Whitesnake. "Still of the Night" sounded incredible and more amazing was they they weren't even the headliner.

A close second is David Lee Roth in the Dome. He was touring for his Eat'em & Smile album (mid 80's) and while he & his album were nothing special, he had Steve Vai on guitar & Billy Sheehan on base. Thier solos were incredible. One would chase the other and back and forth while doing their solos. I was on the floor about 13 rows from them and it was truly an awesome spectacle.

Of recent concerts I would have to say Garbage at the University was great as it was a small and intimate venue and I love all their stuff. Foo Fighters last summer was pretty good and had a cool light show.

Pearl Jam, 1993, Max Bell Arena - Ten was their only album and it was awesome!

Other Highlights: RHCP, Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighter, Bad Religion, Strung Out, Propagandhi (@ Multicultural Centre 1997), Pennywise @ Warped Tour 1999, Mighty Mighty Bosstones 1997, Good Riddance 1996, Avenged Sevenfold, Suicide Machines/Buck-O-Nine 1998, Goldfinger 2001 in SanFrancisco and Seattle, No Use for a Name 1997...

I'm sure I'm missing tons.

Biggest disappointments:
Styx 2004 - they didn't play Mr. Roboto
Bob Dylan 2004 - boring as hell
NOFX 2004 - way to drunk/high/sloppy
Transplants Warped Tour 2005 - super shitty

4- Tragically Hip (3 times in Calgary)

5- Beastie Boys (Ill Communication Tour)

6- BB King (Very cool show)

7- Colin James (man this guys rocks!)

8- Metallica (cool show but not loud enough)

Slayer Feb '02 I think BEST SHOW EVAR!

2nd Metallica May '97 - when they sucked recording but were ok live still.

3rd Gwar, Three Inches of Blood, Megadeth, JUDAS PRIEST, Overkill, Kreator, so many more I cant ever come close to remembering. Local Band Divinity blew my socks off the first time I heard them.

Actually Kreator was 2nd. Metallica falls to third place tie with everyone else ha.

Lets see , first the ones that really stick out , and in no particular order :

The Police ( twice )

Tea Party , in some little bar on 17th , there first tour , awesome

Pearl Jam Max Bell

Joe Jackson

Spirit of The West at MRC , they were amazing live

Neil Young

AC/DC At least twice , lol

Sting

Peter Gabriel total class act , best theatrical show

Genesis

Phil Collins

Crowded House

Men at Work in their day they put on a great show

Collin Hays was lead singer of MaW , very funny

Bruce Cockburn unbelieveable guitarist/song writer . in Banff , front row center .

The Payolas first and last tour , saw them at Lucifers on 7th.

Johnny Cash wasn't a huge fan , but he rocked .

Dave Matthews incredible musicians , Bueford was awesome

Rush many , many times . A favorite .

Supertramp I think it was the last concert to ever play McMahon

Dire Straits

Midnight Oil on the same bill as

Tragically Hip interesting group and evening

Robert Plant he surrounds himself with excellent musicians

Red Rider before Tom Cochran went solo

and thats off the top of my head ! I'm sure there are dozens more big/small name acts that I've forgotten about , or was too gonzoed to remember . Also , this doesn't take into account the many , many acts I've seen in smaller clubs , pubs , universities , parks , or even busking , lol . Then there were all those nights at the King Eddy watching just a bunch of guys jammin and laying it down tight .

Oh , and one of the best was saved for last :

Loose Change saw them in 1990 . Two shows , as they played every tuesday night at the Grainstore Tavern in Melbourne , Australia . For those of you not familiar with them , the drummer in the band was the one and only Virgil Donati , arguably the greatest living percussionist alive . Also saw Virgil doing a drum clinic ( with about 30 others ) at the Long and MacQuaid basement when they were on 17th . He's raising drums to new heights .

i've seen Bad Religion at least 4 times. They would have to put on the best show for me.

I saw Pennywise put on an amazing show at the Snow jam in vancouver 3 or 4 years ago.

Drove to see Lagwagon in Vancouver that was amazing and well worth it.

So many other bands that are awesome to see live that i've seen (some a few times) like Good Riddance, Mad Caddies, Less than Jake, Offspring, Millencolin (i would like to see them again), Rise Against, Zebrahead, Goldfinger, Reel big Fish

I don't even count warped tour performances. Too short.

AC/DC - Highest naked boobie count at a concert ever - couldn't hear for days (was too close to the bell on the floor).

U2 - Hits home when they perform as to what a "Supergroup" really is...

Robert Plant when he first went solo - all you had to do to get high was breathe.

Pink Floyd - what can you say - an absolutely unforgettable experience!

The Eagles - whether you enjoy em or not they have to be the tightest group of musicians I have ever seen and heard. Score 0 for improvisation and spontanaeity but wow what precision.

VH - definitely better with Sammy...

There's been too many to remember...

Biggest disappointment though was Sting - what a fuckin' snorefest!

What I constitute as a great concert is someone who sounds like they do on their album and who doesnt make me yawn with boredom while I watch them perform.

I know I'm going to get pelted with stones for this, but the best concert I have ever seen was Garth Brooks. AMAZING entertainer, his show easily cemented him as my all time favorite singer. Second best concert I have seen is a tie between Cher and Great Big Sea. I've seen GBS twice and man oh man, they know how to put on an event.

I will also say that Nelly Furtado is great in concert as well as Paul Brandt, Terri Clark, Tim McGraw and the Dixie Chicks (cant you tell I'm a country girl?) and although I've grown out of this stage in my life, NSYNC did put on a very excellent show when they were here last.

Next up for me is James Blunt and another Dixie Chicks concert. I've been told Blunt is great in concert, though very arrogant, which is okay, I'm looking forward to it. Probably wont push any of my favorite concerts further down the list, but it should still be a good show.

I will say Swollen Members, Britney Spears and Simple Plan (I did not pay for tickets for these) all suck royally live.

If I could see one band dead or alive, I think it'd be the Police .

And Donati is amazing, the guy has groove like no other.

I first saw The Police at the Max Bell in the very early 80's . Unbelievable energy for 3 extrememly great musicians , but Stewart Copeland's chops and showmanship ( at the time ) were so fresh and new . He mixed it all , straight-ahead rock with reggae and a little jazz and country .... fused together and backing up Stings' bass and Andy Summers' guitar . Leaving that show you just knew these guys would someday dominate the worlds music scene .
I then went up to Edmonton's show ( 3 years later ) for their last tour ( Sync ? ) and although they preformed flawlessly , you could tell there was some strife within the band . The hunger they once had seemed to become overshadowed by something else . At the time , I thought it was because Sting had almost cancelled the show due to his voice problems ( he apparantly had pushed it too far for too long on tour ) , then later the rumours of their fighting and their breakup , it made sence to me . Egos run amuk , well , two of them anyway . Oh well , I still love to listen to Stewarts drumming , and have followed his ventures with the Rythmasist and such .

As for Virgil ...... wow . he is truly a star amongst drummers . No , amongst humanity itself . His work ethic and dedication to self improvemnent is amazing ... off the scale really . His humbleness and confidence are what also left me very impressed . He eats healthy . He runs . He's into yoga . No drugs , not even coffee ! Not to mention he practices 8-10 HOURS a DAY , everyday . He's pushed drumming into a whole new realm , and in this day and age of convenience and shortcuts , he's almost unique . A very admirable character indeed . AND , ( this is the funny part ) I'm not really a big fan of prog rock , lol !!!
I could go on and on about him , but if you ever get the chance , Cor_upt , pick up his videos , or order his older stuff from his site .
Well worth it .

This was the first concert I had ever gone to. Seeing as I was in Jr. High at the time, I was more focused on the girls than the band. Tommy Lee's drum solo was pretty amazing - they had him in this cage thing on a crane that his drum set was bolted to. The whole thing was spinning him around and upside down while he did his solo.

At the time, I was a bit of a headbanger and I really liked Whitesnake too. It was funny they were the openning act because their album was outselling Motley Crue at the time.

Some of the best concerts I had been to were the Spirit of the West concerts at the U of C. I also vaguely remember one at Max Bell that was awesome. I say "vaguely" as I was pretty hammered and in the mosh pit for most of it.

best shows i've been to by far

The Shins at Sasquatch Music Festival was also unbelievable

3. ZZ Top - Saw them at Stage 13, they put on a really good show. I think that they got more tits showed than any other band that year.
