ok i just bought a 2002 vw gti. ive been doing some research on the internet and all of the web sites ive searched say the 02 gti 1.8t comes with a 180 hp motor but the guy i bought it off of says the dealer told him it was 150. does anyone know 100 % that the 2002 gti 1.8t has the 180 hp motor and not the 150 hp. cause if i bought a 02 gti with the older motor im gonna be pissed.

oh forgot to mention...your car may be a 01, it could have been built in late 01 and classified as a 02. so i would suggest check the date by the drivers door

forgot to say congrats on the car

Easiest way to settle it once and for all, look at the stamp on the passenger side of the engine. If it says AWW then its 150hp if it says AWP then its 180hp...

But don't be pissed if its the AWW, only major difference is they cranked the boost up a little bit on the AWP to get the extra 30hp. It's practically an identical motor. If you even chip the engine (raise the boost) you can only raise it to the same level, so a chipped AWW has the exact same HP as a chipped AWP.

Chip is definatelly best bang for buck. It will wake the car up for sure.
Are these about as quick as VR6 Gti's?

well theres a 20 hp difference between the motors but theres alot of potential for cheap with the 1.8t as it is already turbocharged.

the 2002 1.8t is more powerful than the previous years vr6's as the new vr6's have 24 v and the older ones had 12 or 16 i cant remember.

How can a 6 cylinder motor have 16valves? It's 12. the old motor had 2 valves per cylinder and the newer one had 4 valves per cylinder.

1.8 T is a 20v turbo
VR6 is 12v up to 2002, 24v post 2002

That being said, your car stock will be pretty even with the VR6 (will beat a 12v but lose to a 24v) , but once you chip it yours will beat both.
