Hi, I'm in need of major help.

The Locking key for the wheel lug nut snapped in half while removing the lug nut bolt. ( its an actual bolt ) so i've been trying to hammer it, chizzel it, everything.

i guess i need to drill it out or something.... I asked the stealers and they really want to steal my bank account just to remove the bolt.

can someone point me into the right direction?
Thanks very much appreciated.

the lug nut is not the locking nut, but looks similar where the locking nut goes into it.

If there's any decent amount of threads sticking through the hub, soak it with penetrant every couple of hours for a day, then try to remove it from the back side with pliers.

It'd probably be easier to drill it, and use a bolt extractor. (but still do the penetrant thing)

(oh, and you should probably think about removing the rest of the bolts and lightly coating them with general purpose bearing grease, it'll keep them from seizing up on you like that)

Use a "extractor" socket.. It has flutes in it so it grabs it when in reverse.

Pretty tight around the edge. Not sure if you will get the bolt extractors on it.

Even if you do you will probably end up damaging the rim even more than you have already.

Drill out the center of the bolt. Drill in deeper than the head of the bolt (but not by much), then step up the bit sizes until the head pops off of the bolt. You should be able to remove the rest of the bolt (once the wheel is off) with a pair of vise grips.

the bolt is made out of hardened steel.

i'll need to buy a special bit and a powerful drill to do this.

How much of the threads are sticking out away from the rim? If there's enough of the remaining bolt sticking out you could try welding the end of another bolt to it and backing it off that way.
I had a similar problem recently and had a bolt welded to the nut and got it removed that way.

cannot weld it because the lug nut is too far in.
there is possibly no room to weld.

Also, the space between the lug nut hole and the lug nut is very thin. no ordinary socket can fit inbetween there, unless its thin-walled socket.

I got easy outs and a couple powerful corded drills... what you doing tomorrow?

You could get a nut that fits into the rim and weld the inside of the nut onto the broken bolt. the heat from welding will shrink the bolt after it has completely cooled and it should turn out pretty easily

make sure before you try that that a socket will fit.

hey what if i try to weld it from the inside? I would have to cut the sheild and try to take it off like that?

or maybe heat up the bolt with a torch and hammering it?

but i dont want to heat up my rims cause itll weaken the wheel.

i'm free tmw at 3:00...

but im scared of drilling it , if its not drilled straight, itll ruin the threads...

It won't drill it, it digs into the metal and turns it.

The other thing we can try, is its a 17ish mm bolt, we can grab a spare 16 or 15mm socket, and hammer it onto the wheel bolt, if we have to heat up the metal a tiny bit but not too mcuh so the rim doesn't get damaged, and then hammer that bitch on, let it cool for a sec, and impact it off.

oh... hrmmm. we tried putting a socket but the walls on the sockets are too thick.

at a shop when that shit happens they do what "allgonoshow" says
get a smaller socket heat it up hamemr i on and impact it out
works all the time

Just use a center punch to put a mark in the center of the bolt then drill the head off by stepping up in drill bit sizes.
Don't ever use an easy out screw type extractor, they are famous for breaking off and making your problem 10x worse.
If I was around I would stop in and fix it for you. It's quite easy to do. No fear of ruining the threads since you won't be drilling in deep enough to reach the hub.

there are sockets for broken bolts, why dont you try that before drilling this out?? someone already suggested this, and since you have so much room to fit a socket, i dont understand why you dont do that? they are one size fits all, and since they are made out of dozens of flutes, it'll contour itself to even the worst stripped bolt...
