-BMO Mosaik Gold Westjet card - $80 a year - 1 airmile for every $15 you spend (westjet)
-CIBC Aventura Gold Visa - I think it's $120 per year and it's for aeroplan miles, but then you can actually choose from anything in the 'alliance'
-Amex Aeroplan Plus Platinum - $400 a year I think, and it's like 1 aeroplan mile per every dollar you spend..something of that. Also gives me travel insurance, priority check in and access to some airport lounges

All of mine are some form of "frequent traveller" card. I mainly use the CIBC & AMEX (esp in the States)

When they had their affiliation with Canadian Airlines, you got 1.5 points per dollar spent. Also had the Companion Ticket too... buy any airline ticket and get the second one free. That made the $400 annual fee worth it.

Now I carry just the CIBC Aerogold Visa - about $120 annual fee and you get 1 Aeroplan point per dollar spent.

I get the same companion ticket with my AMEX Platinum Delta for under half the annual fee, plus there are so many ways to get bonus miles from random shopping. 37,000 miles to go till I get two round trip tix to Europe. :bigpimp: Not bad considering that I have had the card for a couple years.

CIBC Aerogold Visa - $120/yr and I get an Aeroplan mile for each doller spent that can be used towards flights on Air Canada or purchases through companies aligned with Aeroplan

Capital One Gold Mastercard - $60/yr and the only perk is 9.9% interest

MBNA Platinum Mastercard - No fee and interest of 9% but only until end of Sept then rate goes to 11%

Amex Gold - $130/yr with no big perks on this one except no preset spending limit and front of line for hard to find tickets.

Pretty much all my cards carry insurance for rentals...etc. Only use the Aerogold on a regular basis, the rest just sit in the wallet.

President's Choice MC.

I think it's great! People think you can only use it at superstore, but that's not true. It's a MasterCard--use it anywhere. I loaded up a ton of points by paying my tuition, plane tix, and the downpayment for my car with it.

10 points per $1. Redeem for pretty much anything you want. They have a website where you can order things, like gift certificates to Chapters, Famous Players/Cineplex, Blockbuster, plane tickets, exchange for Petro Points (and vice versa)... http://www.pcpoints.ca/en/index.asp

Frankly, if i just don't feel like paying for stuff at Superstore, I just redeem my points and get it free. I've redeemed for camera stuff, video games, bins, food, basic necessities (e.g. shampoo etc.)... pretty much anything at the store is fair game for redemption.

Those airplane rewards cards are ripoffs. I was looking at the RBC Avion Platinum visa. Its like 100,000 points to fly to Asia. Thats freaking 100,000 dollars of spending. You can take a pretty nice vacation for 100,000 dollars.

If you want to pay for a $3000 TV with cash, or a $2500 couch, go right ahead. They'll most likely look at you funny since large amounts of cash still make it look like you're hiding something.

And if you're going to spend the money anyways, might as well get something out of it. ie that $3000 tv paid on my CC will get me back $150. I'll take a 5% savings over 0% anyday.

Citibank Platinum Enrich Mastercard - 1% (Not tiered, like so many others), no fee, all the platinum perks (Car insurance, price protection, extended warranty, etc...).

For someone like me, that spends $500 or less on a CC in a month it really can't be beat.

I'd love to see the math on the airmile-type ones though, to see if you actually receive a return greater than 1% (As I'd be more than happy to switch).

These days, so is debit or credit. But you have less change to carry around / don't have to go to atms to get cash / you get cashback or points / you get a free 30+ days float on your money.

There's also a security issue with just carrying cash around. My CC people are pretty good. If there is some "unknown" amount charged to my account, they call me up within 24 hours to make sure it's actually me spending my money (this happened to me last week). It's reassurance nonetheless.

well on my TD travel gold i am getting 1.5 percent back. You get 1 point per dollar spent and 5000 points earns you $75 travel rewards.

The nice thing is you can book anything through the TD reward site, there are no restrictions at all and if you dont have enough money in your reward account you can supplement it with your credit it card to pay for the flight. Also for any money spent on the card at the reward site you earn 3 points per 1 dollar spent. The site also doesnt seem to have inflated prices like you would think so this card is a great deal.

The card has an annual fee of $120 but the fee is waived if you have the select service account. IMO this is a great deal if you dont mind having some money sitting around a checking account.

Holy your lucky. MBNA really screwed me. During the 04' run I signed up for the credit card at the game. I signed up because they were offering a free 12 month sub. to sports illustrated. I got the card, but never activated it. MBNA will not leave me alone. They phone probably 5 - 6 times a week, plus 3 - 2 letters trying to sell me a credit card or some line of credit. After a year, Sports Illustrated kept sending me magazines and tried to charge me with it. Glad I got that part straightened out atleast.

Diners Club Professional - Best rewards program as far as I'm concerned including:

1 Point for every dollar you spend
Access to airport lounges across the planet
Annual companion ticket with British Airways
Standard double the warranty on purchases
Purchase insurance for 90 days for loss, breakage, or theft

...and the best part is that you can spend the points on anything you want, airfare, car rental, accommodation, or just about any reward you want including tailored rewards. Your kid need braces? Let em know how much it is and they'll do a point swap. Also the points can be used for any airline on the face of the planet, even regionals.

2nd choice is the Gold Mosaic

There's 2 things you can do.

1. Do a straight balance transfer from one card to the other. Call the number on the back of the card you want to transfer TO and give them the card # you want to transfer FROM.

2. Most CC companies send out low interest cheques periodically which can be used to make purchases, transfer balances, or do anything else you would normally use cheques for. This is an awesome way to get all the benefits for large purchases but without having to carry the large balance.

Example: I paid this semester's tuition and books (approx $3000) with my Diners Club card and got $3000 worth of benefits. Then I transferred it for 6 months to my Amex @ 3.99%. On the last month, if I still have a balance on the $3000, I will transfer whatever's left to my Visa @ 3.99% for another 6 months and so forth.

That's the advantage of having 3 cards. One for the benefits you really want, and two for balance transfers.

TimG
10-16-2006, 04:08 PM
or you can go the less reputable way and get a cash advance from CC #1 to pay your balance on CC #2, and then get a cash advance on CC#2 to pay the balance on CC #1.

repeat until they catch on and ream you :)

Cruz: do all CC's give you full benefits for balance transfers?

Cruz
10-16-2006, 04:10 PM
You don't get any benefits for balance transfers except the benefit of low interest. The objective of the balance transfers the way that I use them is to actually take advantage of the benefits offered by the cards I WANT to use, without having to pay their deadly rates.

10-16-2006, 09:24 PM
If you transfer the balance, you pay the current balance transfer rate for the card you are transfering to, which may or may not be the same as their regular rate.

The exception being special transfer balance offers such as the ones mentioned above.

PC mastercard, still the best deal if you hold out for the end money. 1% cash back at Superstore, or you wait till 300K points, and get 600 bucks at Sears (so 2%). Also merges with Petro Points, so buying gas at PC gets double points. Buying anything at Sears with sears card is 4% when added to the pool. But too many people are doing this so Sears is going to cut it down a bit (I think 450 or 500 for the 300K).

Gotten 1800 back so far, pretty good.

Then a TD Visa no-fee for the free car rental insurance. Saved 70 bucks already and only got it last month. If you rent you should always have a card with this.

Does anyone else that uses the Aerogold think the Aeroplan rewards suck ass? The flights are ridiculous expensive and are stupidly retarded in the fact that I wanted to go to Victoria there could potentially be 3 stop overs and you can only fly with Air Canada or their affiliates.

I just switched my Aerogold to the Aventura with CIBC. Fly with any airline and you can get direct flights starting at 15,000 points. It's the exact same setup as the Avion by RBC.

Aeroplan sucks ass unless

A) you fly out at least once a year
B) you spend a lot on your credit card.

With the new Aeroplan, you must redeem once a year (anything) or your account will be deactivated. Reactivation will cost $30 + 1 cent/mile.

You think it was hard before to save up for a free trip. It's even harder now.

so I have a question about balance transfers..

I currently have one visa now, at a shitty rate, which I would like to balance transfer to a lower rate card from a competing company..

1) will this hurt my relationship with Visa?
2) will this negatively affect my credit
3) how fast will my balance be cleared from the visa card?

1) No

2) A bit, you are applying for another credit card which give your more potential debt.

3) As soon as you new credit card company pays your old debt with Visa.

It won't affect your credit rating whatsoever unless you apply for a new card. If you transfer balances between cards you already have, it's the same as making a purchase on one card and paying off the equivalent balance from another.

it works out to $500 for every 10k you spend, so I guess about 12000

I still don't understand why people even use AMEX.

I'm lucky on my card. It's prime + 2%, and I get 1.5 cash back at the end of the year. So far I'm up to $300 cash back that will be credited in Jan. (Staff card)

Mastercard.

Nice gravy train, and it seems a legit 5% card with no strings. But I think they didn't figure how much it would cost them:

PLEASE NOTE THAT EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 8th, 2006, WE WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THIS PRODUCT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

So it will be interesting to see how long they honor it.

Our whole family uses a Mosaik first home dollars card under my mom's name. 5% back on ALL purchases (no conditions), no fees. Only catch is that you have to spend the money(firsthome dollars) on a house. Mom bought a condo with it and sold it a few years ago. It caps out at $4000 (i think), so hopefully by the time I hit the limit, the housing market has cooled down enough.

They are mostly not worth it unless you travel frequently (great travel benefits) or spend a lot (Membership Rewards points are quite good). Personally I use most of the benefits, so it is worthwhile to me.

ATB Financial has a new card that came out over the summer..the Alberta MyRewards MasterCard, you get 5 reward points for every dollar spent in retail. You can redeem these points for travel packages merchandise on their websites and gift cards. Just like I said it's a new card so they are still working on the value of the points to customer but at the moment its pretty shitty

balance transfers

interest rate of 5.9% for transfer of $400 to $2000
or 4.9% for transfers over 2K
- for the first 4 months

I don't like reward points so I just have the standard MC with a great interest rate ( I work with ATB so I get 8.5% but it's set at 18.9% for customers )

if you guys looking for cashbacks

cashback of 3% on everyday purchases upto $1500
but me thinks there is an annual fee ($120 i'm pretty sure)

if you guys like a card with a lower interest rate then the preferred fixed rate MC would be something you should look at
interest rate at 9.9% with an annual fee of $29, the interest rate does not change as long as you make your minimum payment ( 3% of your balance)

+1

I used to have a PetroPoints MC
and a TD Visa

and a line of credit, but that was too much credit open and it was hurting my credit rating so i closed the 2 and now just have a LOC and ATB MC

Word.

Used to be a big Visa guy, but AmEx is far superior. A lot of places take it, reputable ones anyhow, and if not I have one of each of the "Other" major ones, which never get used now, maybe once a month to keep them active on my file, but with 0 balances. The AmEx rewards are good, and the benefits included especially related to travel are great (insurance, companion tickets, Maple Leaf Lounge, not to mention it looks better on your credit report.

Sure their interest rates suck, but thats the point, dont carry a balance.
