View Full Version : How hard to put a popper on my trunk?

My trunk doesn't have a factory trunk popper and I couldn't afford to get it done for the extra $100 when I got my Compustar installed. So now I got a bit of extra cash and was wondering if it'd be hard to do myself. How does the selenoid work and where can I get one? Is it just plug and play with the wiring into the alarm harness?

Alternatively, if there's a shop that'll do it for $70 or so, I'd do that. I was quoted $100 and $120 when calling around.

Apparently some Honda guys filch the auto popper from Accords and shiet.

Interesting concept. How much do you think one of them would be at a junkyard?

Based on my research, I'd say $12.
That's of course using a lognormal distribution price probability method. Jeff may have a different estimate since I believe he uses a Monte Carlo Simulation when doing used Accord auto popper price studies.

good day sir.

I did exactly what you're talking about for my Prelude. You can get the trunk popper from the 98-02 Accords from the dealership for like $60. Then run a wire to the auxiliary on your compustar brain using a relay (the popper is negative triggered IIRC). It should take you like 20 minutes.

Ah, that's what I was looking for! So will I need anything besides the selenoid and the wire? It's pretty obvious I need a relay, just wanted to make sure. I've never wired a relay but this seems like a good time to learn. Any idea how much they are?

Relays cost a couple bucks. All you need is the popper (it comes as a complete assembly) and the wire.

That's cool, I have loads of wire. Does it need to be welded on or bolted?

hey i installed a trunk popper i bought off ebay for like $25. it is also a 15lb solenoid so there is lotsa power. was very ez to mount and i used a crimp to hold the line to my trunk latch. then luckely my alarm (compustar) puts out a +12v signal to the trunk line when the trunk button is pressed. so i just ran the wire to that and it works great. no problems so far.

Are there universal assemblies? Where? I was at T&T and he said they only had the complete assemblies, not the selenoid itself.

Hey I got your pm. I'll post it here so other people can benefit as well.

The accord popper you're looking for is all one unit (it includes the actuator/solenoid already - you don't need anything external). I believe it's 98-02. Any dealership should be able to get it in.

Cool, thanks for the information. I'll check with a few other Honda dealerships, but I went around the counter and looked at the guy's computer, he showed me the part and the cost for it, it was over $100. I'll post here when I find some more answers, thanks!

Got the DIY here (http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155266).
And I'm also going to do this (http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56901&highlight=trunk).

Sorry, you'll have to sign up on the forums to view the links. The first one is a DIY on how to attach the trunk release from an Accord and how to hook it up to work on the Civic. The second is air shocks for the trunk so it opens on its own.

So I heard back from the parts guy I was dealing with and now he actually knows what I'm talking about and quoted me a more reasonable $34.11 for the part. Only one problem.....the part numbers don't match the DIY on the other forum.
So the DIY has 2 part numbers, both for 2001 Accord trunk latches.
1. 08E49-S84-100H
2. 08E49-S84-101H

And the parts guy quoted me a part number of 74851-S84-A21. This part number is also the 2001 Accord trunk latch as I have found on the internet, but could it be the difference between Canada/USA models? Wouldn't they be identical? Please help, maybe I'll just bring all 3 part numbers and see what he can do for me.

I just went to the dealership with the part numbers ending in 100H and 101H. These are the correct part numbers, however they are for the US spec version of the Accord. The guy said he was ordering a bunch of stuff from the USA this week anyway so he's going to bring it up for me and sell it to me at a total of $71 + tax. I figured screw it, might as well get it from somewhere where I don't have to worry about customs charges and duties of any kind, so I should have it in a few days.
