question about the stair shelves
saw them at ikea and wonder how they get mounted onto the walls :dunno:

Ekliptix
09-21-2006, 12:52 PM
I have not mounted either of them yet, but there's a wall mounted peg that slides into each end of the stairs.
Their setup diagram only shows it being mounted like "WW", ie. horizontal. I plan to try it inclined = stairs.

I'll use drywall studs. 4 on each of the 2 peg brackets that go on either end of the shelf.

I think you need to hang a picture or something in the center of the wall over the monitor between the shelfs.

Other than that it is pimped, I am loving the balance of it.

Suggestions:

Use white silicone (paintable DAP at home depot) to make the shelves flush to the wall....it can be applied and then painted over with the blue to make a clean line.

Paint baseboard white to match the rest of the casings.

Choose a horizontal rectangular painting or piece of art to mirror and tie in teh long desk. Height should be eye level ( about the first set of brown boxes high.

Paint the white desk brackets the blue - creates more of a clean floating look

Silicone the desk to the side walls....more professional and finished look..

I've done a lot of renos, this is a great first Home Improvement job you've started and my advice is not meant to condescend...ENJOY!

Wow, those are great ideas! I appreciate the help.
I'm having a tough time chosing a photo for above. I was actually thinking of making a bunch of wooden disks from a log (different diameters) and arranging them in a vertical line behind the monitor to the roof. The line would be a little wider then the width of the monitor, their color would be similar to that of the chair. Too much?

edit, I like your horizontal idea better.

If you're having trouble choosing a photo, perhaps getting a frame that you can change the photo in would be a good idea. That way, whenever you get bored of the picture you can print out one of your shots and stick it in the frame. A Beyond member/photographer has that sort of idea, but throughout his whole house - he has all of his favorite shots from all over the world printed out in 8X10, and swaps them out whever he feels like a change of decor or subject. He must have at least 50 pictures in matching frames, just in the area of his house that I saw. I thought it was stellar, but my photo backlog isn't large enough to pull it off effectively.

Wow, I can't believe I have not done more work on the office for 5 months. I managed to find some time today to do a little more:

I have not worked on the home office for months and months but I got around to doing some stuff today:

Bought the shelf at Ikea. It normally is used in the position seen here.

They're good for 1000lbs each and I used 3 bolts on each into the wood behind the drywall, but I am buying a 3rd bracket tommorow.
I also have a couple small L brackets up top to keep the top tight to the wall.

I have the one thing under the shelves. The top 1/2 is for storing stuff and the bottom half is a file cabinet which I have not put the white cover on yet. I will probably end up getting something identical looking with just 2 level of storage space to put beside the first cabinet.

The cord goes around the left side of the wall mounted shelf, along the bottom of it, then drops down behind that cabinet on the floor under the shelf where it plugs in. There's a switch included with the lighting kit (came in a 5 pack of lights), but I plan to wire it and the lights behind the desk into a wall switch.

Thanks! No, I don't have any building experience. I hadn't actually painted a wall before, but it's pretty simple. Maskign stuff off takes the longest. For the color combo I was looking for a color to paint the room and I was flipping through one of the paint catalogs at Home Depot. There was a blue room with white accents and I remembered all the white stuff that Ikea had so I flipped through their catalog and wrote the names of the stuff down that might work (the staircase shelves mainly).

For the desk I knew what I wanted but wasn't sure where to get it. I thought about making it from plywood and then attaching laminent on it, but then I found the white table (already the perfect length) at Home Depot.

While at Ikea I was just waking around looking for stuff that might work. I came accross the big white shelf that's now on my wall and looked at it for about 15min trying to picture how I would mount it and how it would look in the room. I bought the pot lights and picture frames about 10 min later knowing how I'd use them. I actually wanted to fill the bottom 1/5th of the picture frames with sand since they're pics from the Bahamas but I got impatient yesterday and just mounted them w/o sand.

Before I even painted the room or mounted anything I drew a sketch out of what I wanted the desk area to look like. It came out pretty close.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/Ekliptix/home%20office/sketch.jpg

I hope to removate/upgrade the whole house (My Brother and I live here). I'll probaby do my bedroom next and I have some ideas for it, totally different then the office. I travel to the US a lot now and get to go to a lot of resturants so I manage to see some cool design and lighting ideas that I hope to apply although I'll probably have to custom make a lot of it and there'll be a lot of trial and error since I have few tools.

It's fun stuff though, and not a bad way to spend a few bucks.
