Almost all ISPs have news servers. Telus' news server address is:

news.telus.net

It doesn't use the HTT protocol.
It's NNTP.

Here's a good read:

There's a lot to learn when first starting out with Newsgroups, but there are a lot of backups there.

Newzbin is pretty good for indexing everything that's posted on usenet. I recommend getting a premium usenet provider.
Most unlimited accounts range from $5.95/month to $14.95/month.

I use usenet and newsbin pro to fetch

you can search for what files you want to find what newsgroups they are located in by using www.newzbin.com

I get all my stuff from newsgroups, killer speed and easy as hell to use.

Newsgroups get most things (Games, movies, music) slightly earlier than torrent sites and IRC. Using a free server is just a waste of time and bandwidth though. Completion rates on Shaw's are retarded at best and the cost is a fraction of what you save by pira... Er... Backing up your stuff.

Use GrabIT to fetch from new.telus.net

Quite easy to use and has always worked great for me.
