I'm getting the damn itch again. I have been leaning towards the 2004 S4 but would like some other ideas...what would you buy within my price range. Not overly intersted in spending 40 then dropping 10K into the car, i rather just get more car right off the bat. What else should i be looking at?

Infiniti M35/45 seems to get excellent reviews all the time.
You'd probably have to go 1-2 years old on these IIRC.

If I were u I would go with something a little different from everything else, different and well respected obviously. I would go with a Saab 9-3 Aero, or even a 9-5 aero, awesome cars with awesome performance. Forget the beemers everyone seems to have one these days.

Yeah I've been thinking about a 911 but Im kinda worriedabout getting a 5 year old car with no warranty, and i'm assuming these things are expensive if there are any issues....

Buy a 2004 S4, or a 01-03 E39 M5, or perhaps a E46 M3. But your going to get the most car with the S4 or M5. I would really suggest the S4, you get AWD and IMO the nicest interior in the business and the newest car of the bunch.

MB C350 is right in your price range.
Great package for what you get.
Maybe it's time to enter the world of Mercedes Benz.

Buy a C6 from the states and call it a day. Nothing in that price range will touch it. Of course if the vette is your cup of tea.

If your looking at cars with V8's, anything with a V6 will likely dissapoint you unless it has a couple turbos slapped on it. This rules out the MB C350 and Infinity M35.

He said he needs it to be reasonably practical, so the Vette is out of the question. Also if he is after german product I am guessing the way the vette is built being a collection of parts from the lowest bidder (except perhaps the motor), it will not appeal to him.

The 545 is a pretty big car, probably bigger even than the Infinity M cars but its a good one. It won't be as fast/fun as the older M3/M5 or the S4 though. I didn't think 545's were down in the 50's yet are they?

If you want the newest car with performance second only to perhaps the E36 M5, which would be an older car (2002 would be your price range) you need not look further than the 2004 S4. It is faster than everything else suggested, and on par with the M5 and M3's but it has AWD, 4 doors and is a 2004 model.

You'd be surprised. My 530XI is smaller than my 2000 Camry. It's built upwards more, so it looks bigger. The 325hp V8 in the 545i should be enough to satisfy anyone using it as a daily car; it's not like you're going to be flying down the street hitting the redline in every gear.

I've driven the Jaguar Type S R and it is nothing special. It isn't as solid as the german competition, perhaps there are too many Ford parts in it but I have no idea. It has the odd rattle and creek and such, it just isn't built ot the same standard as the rest IMO.

Do yourself a favor and buy it a car from the US

I just bought a 2003 X5 4.6is, was easy as pie, and I saved approx. $15 000

$55 000 CDN will buy you and AMAZING car from the US.

I used www.carsourceusa.com and it was super easy.

Good luck, you should have no prob finding a great car.

BTW,

BUY the S4, and take that from a BMW owner!! I previously owned a 2003 Audi A4 and I loved it.

Your car is very nice, but he can buy a brand new C6 vette for 54k CAD to his door, all costs in including GST, duty and exchange, that is 5 years newer from the states. Nothing against your car, but anyone shopping for a vette would be silly not to do that. Also, there are alot of 2004 Z06's going for mid 40's in the trader, and most 2002's are in the 30 thousands. I don't think its even an issue though as I think he said in this thread or a previous one he needs something practical too.

You can only get AWD on the Is250, and if he is looking at cars with V8's, the power delivery of any V6 that isnt turbocharged will likely be dissapointing to him.

They are very average cars, and can't hold a candle to the S4, M3 or pretty much any other car mentioned in this thread. They are not very fast, but they do look nice. Everything about it was just average, I've driven the S4's, M3, M5, etc. etc and they are all twice the car as the volvo IMO. But, just like any one of these threads, you have to drive one yourself I guess.

Get the S4, its faster and more sporty than the 545 and has AWD!

The 545 is an awesome car though, if you like it better than the S4 for whatever reason, you certainly are still getting one awesome car.

I'm still torn...I wish te s4 was a touch more agressively styled and the interior a bit nicer, the 545 is kinda old man is but with rims and drop and tint I think the pimp look would be real nice...I think both are similar in terms of stright line performace but i'm pretty sure the s4 wil out handle the 545, the s4 will deprcitae more i think but im not sure...

545 is not much slower than the S4. It won't be noticeable unless you're at the track. C&D tested one at 14.1@103 thru the quarter. I've seen S4 test in the 13.9 range. :dunno:

I think their about a half second off in the 0-60, but who really does that anyways? Unless their both automatics, 99% of people will never come close to the 0-60 times the car is capable of, or the 1/4 times so I do agree with you.

The S4 is smaller, more nimble, and IMO more agressively styled than the 545 but thats just me I guess. The S4 strikes me definately as more of the "sports" car of the 2, but they are both very close. If your going to drop the 545, throw on some rims and tinit it, why not do that to the S4 too?

For depreciation, the 545's were $95,000 and the S4's were $73000 or high $60,000's at the time. So if their the same price now, (assuming $55000 for each) the BMW has depreciated alot more, being worth about 58% of its new cost and the audi 75% of its new cost.

What you should do is go out this weekend and test drive them both back to back, with the only time inbetween being the time it takes you to drive to the other dealership. Take them both on good 30 min test drives, and maybe drive each twice.

I know glenmore audi has 2 S4's right now, as my dad is looking for a replacement to his 540i and is basically looking at the same cars you are, the S4 and 545. Waiting for the 550i price to drop a bit may be an option too, as those things haul ass.

Just go drive them both twice in the same afternoon, and try to get them on the same pieces of road. If you can, go around the blackfoot/glenmore/deerfoot area where there are tones of fun on/off ramps, merges, exits, etc. etc. and take them both through the same route.

Let us know what you choose!
