I want to buy a DVD player capable of playing different file formats but specifically, .avi files. The DVD players I've looked at mention they play VCD, SVCD, DivX etc. but don't specifically mention .avi.

The bottom line is this. I want to put .avi files without re-encoding/modification onto a DVD and watch them using the DVD player. Is there a DVD player capable of this that's reasonably priced (<$150)?

I bought a Panasonic DVD-S42S for $79 this past weekend.

It kicks some serious ass. Drop in a DVD filled with DivX/XviD and enjoy.

Philips DVP-642 is a good one, $50 or so.

LG 530 or somthing is also good, 531 does upscaling also.

Does the .avi format fall into the DivX/XviD family? If so, can I assume that if the specs state the player can handle DivX/XviD formats, it will implictly play .avi?
