What are the most common cars that people break into/steal? I've heard the older Hyundai Tiburons are #1 but then others tell me that Civics are #1?

About 4 or 5 years ago when I was getting an alarm installed they had reports that said it was the civic.

Who'd wanna steal a Hyundai Tiburon??? :dunno: :nut:

It changes every year but Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry seem to always make the list of top 3

Any Civic/Integra are good targets.

Accords/Camry are also targeted for parts.

If you have to park outside @ night, make sure you leave nothing in the car. And if you have fancy radio, take the face plate off.

The compustar sure must be great if people can still break into your car. Or are you saying that the compustar was added AFTER you had your civic broken into?

Since I drive a Civic myself, I was thinking of investing in a Compustar as well, but I'd like to know just how secure it really is. But nonetheless, it's nice to be able to tell if your car has actually started after you press the button (with their 2-way remote that is).

^^^ Best advice in this thread.

Nobody wants to steal my cassette deck, and they can't see the CD changer. :)

I have a theft recovery civic which was stolen when it had a compustar, it's apparently not hard to bypass kill switches and what not

People will steal your car regardless, I hate it. My cousin in California bay area had his nice civic hatch stolen. He had a alarm hooked up and when the car was stolen it had no steering wheel. Japanese adaptor and key lock. Unbelievable. He told me how it happend when they found the car. I won't tell anyone how though.

It was also not with a flatbed or a random steering wheel. Thieves know their thing in Cali. Not sure about here though, which is a good thing...

I'm pretty sure you can steal alot of POS American cars like explorers, jimmy's, blazers, etc. by jamming a screw driver into the ignition. They are super easy to get into as well, apparently. My cousin has a GM pickup and a screwdriver is his key and it works every time haha. I don't know why he didn't just get another key made, but that is besides the point.

How are people stealing those 330i's and such? Don't you absolutely need the key to take those, or a crane and flatbed?

Apparently until very recently Hondas were really easy to steal - combine that with a good market for parts and lots get stolen. Jeep Cherokees are also high on the list (I had one and was shocked at the insurance price).

Most of these alarm packages are only as good as it is hard to take your lower dash panel off.

Stealing a US$100,000 car with little more than a laptop sounds like the stuff of which long-running urban legends are made. Unfortunately for owners of US$100,000 vehicles everywhere, it's true.

David Beckham, the English soccer football star now swinging his ponytail for Real Madrid, found this out the hard way when his armored BMW X5 was stolen by Spanish thieves (strangely enough, it wasn't even the first time). The thieves apparently used a laptop to pop the locks and start the vehicle's engine, then drove away while Beckham was at lunch.

This isn't just a problem for people married to Posh Spice. More modestly priced cars like the Toyota Prius also use fob-based ignition systems that do not require physical keys to operate. Armed with a laptop, the proper software, and a radio transmitter, thieves can remotely unlock and then start such cars.

Though such cases are still infrequent, they do happen. A Czech car thief told the Prague Post about his own lifelong experiences in the business, pointing to Nicolas Cage's Gone in 60 Seconds as an especially inspirational film. Radko Souček began his career pilfering cheap Škodas and Italian imports, which he claims could be stolen with nothing more than a pair of scissors. As cars went high-tech, Souček was forced to follow. Unfortunately for Souček, the laptop he bought and used to break into certain cars actually helped to convict him. When police finally arrested him, they found information on his laptop about the cars he had stolen.

"You could delete all the data from your laptop, but that's not good for you because the more data you have, the bigger your possibilities," he says.

Such stories will no doubt spur a cat-and-mouse game between car manufacturers and thieves. Before getting too worried about your Prius in the parking lot, though, it's worth remembering that the vast majority of stolen cars have mechanical locks and ignitions. The move to keyless fobs is not necessarily a move away from a secure system, but it does come with a new set of challenges.

Stay tuned to this space for the inevitable report on the theft of Beckham's new Audi Q7.

I was watching Market Place special about Car breakins and cars being stolen. Car theifs will steal most anything, as long as it has enough tourqe, and will blend in.

A breakin could happen to any vehicle. You leave some change out in the open or something and a crack head comes along and steals that. If the crackhead does that 4 or 5 more times there maybe enough money for a hit. Dont leave valueables in your car!

unfortunetely its the dc2 tegs which are in trouble, theives steal them for their engines, and they are uncredibly easy to steal, if you can get something behind the window the window will just pop out of its frame. glad i got my compustar.

The thing about integras is that the North American stats are highly skewed from the American thefts. Here is a look from a Canadian viewpoint.

Caravans and Neons are so easy to break into. That's why people steal them. Doesn't really matter what's in them, if they need a ride, they take them.

MintRacer

alarms and clubs are just designed to slow down a experienced thef, the better the install such as hidden moduals and sirens the longer it will take a crook to steal your ride...
