U Turns

My question is in regard to U-turns. Can you tell me when it is okay and when it is not okay to make a U-turn?

A driver must not make a reverse turn unless they can do it without interfering with other traffic. In addition to this general prohibition, a reverse turn must not be made in the following circumstances:

on a curve

near the crest of a grade where the reverse turning vehicle cannot be seen by another driver approaching within 150 metres

where a sign prohibits a reverse turn

at any intersection where a traffic control signal has been erected, unless permitted by bylaw

in a business district unless the turn is made at an intersection where no traffic control signal exists
A driver making a reverse turn must also pay attention to the lines on the highway. Regardless of what kind of line is marked, double solid, solid and broken or single solid or broken lines, you may not make a reverse turn across them..

Bylaws now complicate the matter. They may be different in each municipality across the province, allowing the reverse turn in some municipalities and prohibiting it entirely in others. The only way to know for sure is by reading the bylaws for the places that you regularly drive.

Going around the block is an alternative to making a reverse turn and is not subject to prohibition through a bylaw. Unless you are sure of your circumstances this may be a better choice than a reverse turn.
