Pitbull Care?

I just adopted a pitbull from a friend who was going to turn him into the kennel. The dog is very well mannered but id like some info on how to care for him. What is the cold climate tolerance of these dogs? Its a big dog and i'm building him a home with heat lamps but is this enough?

Also, are these dogs to be kept away from kids or other dogs? Any other relevant info?

Its said that they are good with kids but can be territorial with other dogs. Really it depends on the dog and its temperment.
