I feel like a retard as I usually laugh at the people who post, " I have 10g's what should i buy" threads,

but I graduate in 6 months from college and am starting to get ansy about not having a dope car... so I am going to fill my time from then until now looking for what I will get in May.

This will be a daily driver (99.99%)

No kids at the moment, have GF

Want luxury/performance... not cheap and fast, but not plush and slow either

Will upgrade (depends on car how much work I will do)

Needs to go good in winter

Good speed, handling, reliability (w/ mods), nice to look at.

Vote on the pole on what u should get, and post why you think so.

WRX fits everything you are looking for except it's not luxury. You can get WRX for around $37,500 out the door.

If you want power and luxury, oh żou are going to have to spend a lot more.

Sorry when I ment like luxury, I just mean that if I drove it to my job and I took my boss out to lunch it wouldnt be uncomfortably cheap, and I wouldnt feel out of place in it with a suit on.

I guess to me luxury means not cheap looking or feeling, not like ingrained wood or any of that shit

Actually the IS250/350 would be the top for sure, but they are pricey!

Build a FFR for 60k

low 10second quarter mile with the proper engine (at our elevation even  ), less than 6000 units world-wide, total panty dropper.

btw, I think your idea of dope is pretty off; you have a G35, WRX (both good), then a civic and a VW

but if STi is in your options an IS250/350 shouldnt be too far fetched

is that replica cobra good in winter???
haha, it is dope though

I would never buy a new STi, I would consider the regular wrx... I dont want to live in my apartment and have a dope car, i need balance. Last time i checked the IS i priced was almost 50

Same w/ a G35, would never buy a new one

The VW and Civic would be the purchase and dump lots of money into... so maybe not great choices but like I said I dont know as of yet what I want, maybe the VW and Civic are a little boy racer

You can buy a yugo even cheaper and split the difference in mods and make it run 8s, but it's still a yugo

So the first thing you want to do upon graduation is buy a rapidly depreciating 50K asset that will be "dope"?

I suggest you check out the Allgonoshow loan thread for a dose of reality. Put the 'dopeness' aside, and buy a house.

You cant compare all those cars.... Civic VS WRX or G35? They're totally different cars.

Infinity G35 - too pricey.
WRX - no luxury and bland styling
Civic - hasn't been dope since the 90's
VW GTI - has a little bit of everything and is in the middle price-wise.

Easy choice: VW GTI:thumbsup:

WRX

i'd go with the G35 or the WRX,

Aleks

If you can stand a basic interior the WRX would be the most fun quickest car of the bunch.

I would check out the Gti and a WRX on the same day and pick the one you like better.

GTi has a 4-6 month wait period BTW.

haha

That said, the new civics are sweet. Definitely doesn't feel like you're driving around in an economy car.

I voted G35 at initial glace but after reading through the thread and agreeing with this post and the house comment 100% VW is definately the way to go!!

I would say entry level luxury cars may be more up your alley, something like the Acura TSX would be a good choice, it's a cheaper price range and fits your other categories pretty well. You won't be blowing away every car you meet but it has decent punch and great handling. It's definitely got a great look and would be something I would associate with a young professional. The new Civic isn't horrible either, it definitely has a more refined look then previous generations but I wouldn't say it's luxury, it also lacks in your other requirements though. The G35 is up there in price and definitely not the best of the crop for winter, and the WRX and GTI just cry boy racer.

thanks everyone

1.) about the house comment... My stepfather and father in law are both realtors and are kicking in my DP as a grad gift..

2.) about the TSX, i took one out for a spin... a little overly slow for me. Granted I havnt driven the other ones.

GTI loved it but am worried about getting tired of the 2 doors

3.) viffer.. u are the one trying to get me the job dont u remember?? geez just cause i havnt been on CGP in a while... oh well i have a few interviews lined up now...

hah anyways i like the new civic but its not quite as nice as the GTI and i dont know, but its up there because they are the first civic i've ever liked

gti comes in 4 doors too, it is my pick. i wish the wrx wasn't so nasty inside, or else i would've bought it instead of the gti..

The Cosworth
10-13-2006, 05:08 PM
oh yeah i forgot the new gti comes in 4-door

how will it handle, accelerate compared to its smaller 2-door brother??

it is a ton heavier or what

danno
10-13-2006, 05:23 PM
it won't be much off, maybe 200lbs more. not alot slower, if speed matters don't get the gti. the wrx will be faster and the si is really close (but cheaper).

imo the gti is a nice everyday cruiser, and performs will with mods. plus i had to have leather and the civic doesn't have it.

the gti 4 door and 2 door has no difference in size iirc...they just added 2 more doors.

Factory HID, leather, heated seats, 6-disc cd changer, sunroof, auto climate control, all for like 27 g's tax/freaight/pdi in. It's not the fastest car, but faster than the cvic and not much slower than the gti, but as stated before, maybe you should get a job before looking at cars

what do you prefer?

AWD, FWD, RWD?

If you can narrow that down, your choices are so much easier. I decided I'd never get a FWD again unless i'm married lol. AWD/RWD is so much more fun to drive :)

IS250 RWD  pick up a used one next year when you graduate, there might be a few going for cheap
or
Subaru WRX (STi) AWD... so nice, but the interior isn't very luxury like :)

Why buying a new one? After a year it looses half of its price and within a couple years you want have a new one. Go for a classic that could also be used for daily driving.

Try a classic. Ok, I am a little bit biased (coming from Germany) but what about a Mercedes-Benz 300D (W124) or 300SD (W126, japanese import).

- daily driver: its a diesel, has therefore a long life expectancy and has a relatively low diesel consumption.
- Luxury ok
- Reliable: no doubt if it was properly maintained
- Needs to go good in winter: Since it is an old-school swirl-chamber diesel engine you could add petroleum or regular gas to the diesel w/o any problems (1:10). Thus, you could run that car even below -25°C.
- Handling: This depends. If you are used in driving rear-wheel-drive cars in the winter time, this is not a big deal. However, changing from a Golf to such a car would be quite a change.

Also the gas-versions of the cars described above are pretty cool. However, they require a litte more maintenance, but they will be probably better suited for the winter time.

And the pro, you probably might get a good one for approximately 10,000 - 15,000 CAD over there (e.g. here (http://www.mbclubcanada.com)).

I think I will be spanked for that, but don't go for a Mercedes model from 1996-2005 (e.g. W202,W203). These guys had serious quality problems in that time especially concerning EMC compliance and rust protection (W203 owners check out the bottom of your drivers door and you will be surprised). If you look for other reliable imports check out used BWM (e.g. 735d) or Audi (e.g. quattro), except for the TT (the early models had some quality problems with the steering).

If that is what your concern is, I'd check out a 2002 or newer BMW 325IS or something of that sort. It's everything you want and won't be insanely expensive by buying brand new.

I didn't take the comment as a knock against the STI. The OP probably is a few years away from kids, but just in case he wasn't, I didn't want him to think that the STI wasn't a "family car"

Off topic, but all of my kids get into arguments over who gets to go in the Subaru. In not so many words, they tell me they like the cornering grip and acceleration. I commute daily with my son in the car and went on a 1600 km road trip with him, and not once has he complained about how stiff or harsh the ride was. While I am extra careful when driving with him in the car, I am never shy with accelerating with the full rpm range available to me. I just don't go faster than 10 over the speed limit, nor do I do 5000 rpm clutch sidestepping launches.

I also considered the LGT before deciding on the STI, and am always more than a bit surprised when people make these lists and don't at least consider them. Good compromise of performance and luxury with AWD goodness to boot. They also take well to bolt-ons since turbocharged cars from the factory need less money spent in aftermarket parts to get power than those that come from the factory without any forced induction.
