The Iranian gov't has banned all Internet connections over 128kb/s on the grounds that foreign videos and music are undermining Iranian culture.

We're just as stupid here in Canada.

The order follows a purge on illegal satellite dishes, which millions of Iranians use to clandestinely watch western television. Police have seized thousands of dishes in recent months.
Canada does the same thing to those that clandestinely watch US television.

A little bit different... you can still get pretty much any US channel you want here, its just the CRTC wants to make sure you have enough Canadian crap eating up some of that bandwidth too.

Acutally it's different because in Iran it's over cultural protectionism, in Canada, it's over business disguised as cultural protectionism.

And ya, there's a LOT of good shows that we don't get up here. We just started getting Mind of Mencia last week!

I think those who control Iran are a bunch of frustrated guys that can't get it up so they don't want anyone else to have fun either :whipped:

...and with no internet they don't get 10 ads/day for cheap Viagra, so they are only compounding their problems :D

Well, in Iran it seems to be quashing of public dessention disguised as culturan protectionism.

But, to keep my thread balanced, here's a link to the U.S. gov't taking what seems to be their first real step towards actively policing the Internet:

Stone age government, not people. You can't classify a people based on their government, or are you saying all Americans are power-hungry imperialists?

Nice put.

People ain't stone age. Iran can easily overtaken India on tech outsourcing if they don't have a bad name in the international stage.

Plus, the government provides health care 10X better than Canada could to our own people. Waiting for MRI? That's impossible in Tehran.

Don't let the extremists fool you. Iranian youth parties like we do, just not in public and keep it underground.
