Boy fights for life after freak accident

Childish curiosity has left a 14-year-old boy fighting for his life after he was hit by a rock spun out from the tire of a city bus.
The accident happened about 5 p.m. yesterday after the victim and a friend placed the stone on the tire track of a vehicle trap on Centre St. N., near the north leg of Bergen Circle.
Police Insp. Guy Slater said the pair had put it there because they were curious as to what would happen when a bus went over a rock.
They were watching from some grass near the fixture -- designed to allow bus traffic only between the Beddington neighbourhood and the interchange of Beddington Tr. and Harvest Hills Blvd. -- when a southbound bus drove over it.
"It was sort of like the coin on the railway tracks thing," Slater said, adding one of the bus' tires caught the projectile and spun it toward them.
"Their experiment went horribly wrong."
Paramedics rushed the stricken boy to Alberta Children's Hospital with a life-threatening head wound and no update on his condition was immediately available.
The other boy's mom, Angela Florez, said her 13-year-old son Christian immediately called for help after the accident and is still in shock because of what happened to his friend, who she identified only as Kevin.
"Christian stopped another bus and told the driver what happened and the police and an ambulance were called," Florez said as Christian was interviewed by traffic section officers.
"I don't think he realizes what exactly happened yet."
