Is there any way to figure this out other than trial and error?

Zane is older than Mabel, and both have 2-digit ages. Zane's age is the same as Mabel's age backwards (ie 12 and 21) and Mabel's age doubled is within a year of Zane's age.
How old is Zane?

so it can't be 10 20 or 30 etc right since, reverse of that is 01 02 03 and they aren't 2 digit numbers?

Yup, both of them have to be 10 or older. I eventually figured it out through trial and error, but thought there must be a better/easier way.

yeah I was bored at work so I decided to do trial an error

Zane = 73
Mable = 37

37*2 = 74

73 and 74 are within 1 year of each other.
