Hello all,

We would like to show a out of town friend around. But are are exhausted out of ideas. What places do you guys recommend? I can only afford a daytrip at a time so overnights are out of the question.

Please post the distance and what to do there.

So far, we've been to:

Edmonton
Drumheller
Banff
Lake Louise

Columbia ice fields and Jasper.

Edit: Jasper is about 4 hours from Calgary. I've done it a few times before as a day trip.

Grassi Lakes in Canmore. Nice day hike you can do any time of the year and you can visit the Canmore Nordic Centre.

Another vote for Waterton . Expect it to be very sleepy at this time of year , and you may even find lots of their stores etc. borded up for the winter . VERY beautiful place to walk around in the fall though . Check to make sure it's not windy before you go though as it can be really annoying even trying to get out of your car !

Columbia icefields are nice too , but IMHO , Jasper is just too far . It's probably closer to 5 hours away , and you'll be driving for what , 10 hours just for a short stay in Jasper ?

I'd also just grab a map , find a area like Black Diamond and just go Town hopping . Visit all the small towns/villages around in a area . Some great little areas are like : Lacombe , Bently , Eckville , Sylvan Lake , Gull lake , etc .

Or .... even Spray lake . Pack a lunch and go hiking in the mountains around our lakes . Check with the local Rangers to find out if there are any bears in the area first .

Someone already mentioned it. Drive through Turner Valley and Black Diamond down the Cowboy Trail to the Crowsnst Pass. This is one of my favourite drives. Lots of history and nature to see in the Crowsnest.

funny how people "read" the OP yet still post things that were in the OP

+1 and dinner at the Steak Pit. If you make a reservation ahead of time, they will make your friend a wooden sign with his name engraved into it as a souvenir.

True. They couldn't have seen all the Banff tourist traps in one previous day trip. There's also the Sprit of Christmas store that's worth a visit.

Johnston Canyon is just outside Banff and there's an easy hiking trail that'll kill a couple of hours.

OOOOPS......I guess I'm on crack.

I kinda thought it was odd that no one mentioned Drumheller when I read the whole thread ;)
