That extra $20 on that amount of money amounts to a 40% interest penalty if we're talking strictly a year. It's more if the time period is lower.

It always amazes me that the government is fighting the payday loan industry so hard these days to prevent them from shylocking and unscrupulous loan sharking. Yet, here they are charging exorbitant rates and strongarming citizens through registries.

They are just doing their job.

Tip: if you can manage to park 7m away from a parking meter it's perfectly legal. Some judges will allow 6m+ if you go fight it

Can you elaborate on this? Usually, within 7 meters of a parking meter, there's either another meter, or a posted no parking sign.

There are spots that don't have signs or other meters after them, usually the last ones or ones close to drive ways and some bus stops. You have to know the rules and keep your eyes open for these spots as they are not always noticable. I have been doing that for the past 2 years and only managed to get 1 ticket.

It's getting harder though. People are catching on and you have to be there at like 630am or earlier to get the good ones.

In actuality, I don't think they are paid all that badly and probably get good benefits. As long as they don't tell anybody what they do and avoid conflict on the street it's probably not as bad as you think.

I think working the counter at the impound lot would be far more abusive than writing parking tickets. You can bet that just about every person that walks in that place is mad as hell and out for muder.

Just mean people in general.
A few years back there was this story on the news about one meter maid dude. It was winter and this guy was walking up to his car as this meter maid was writing him up. Just as he approaches, an elderly woman in her 70s slips and falls on the sidewalk, smacking her head pretty good. The guy goes over to the lady to help and asks the meter maid to call for help with his cell/raido thingy. The guy says he wasn't allowed to use it for anything but parking related work and goes back to writing up the rest of the parking ticket he was working on, totally ignorant of the situation going on. He apparently finished up and walks away. Somebody who witnessed this whole thing grabbed the ticket off the car and called in his "badge" number right away to rat on him. Needless to say, the guy not only got in trouble, but got a lot of bad media about it too.

I wonder why serial killers never go after these guys? I mean why would you go after hot girls or young boys? I'm sure you could pick quite a few of these doofuses, before getting caught..

If this odes happen, it wasn't me, I swear... Its just crossed my mind as I see them marching around downtown....

If anyone knows buchanans, they have a loading dock out back, which if you park half in, up against their glass fence, your not in the way.. I had their permission to park there, as I was doing some work there before they were open, so I was out to my car and find this dick about to ticket me.. I told him I had permission the whole bit, and he said "he had talked to people with the city and its actually part of the sidewalk" which it clearly isn't.. He wouldn't give me the name of these "people" he talked to, or anything, saying get the car moved or a ticket, and if I didn't leave him alone, he'd be making some calls.. fuckin cunts..

But there was this blond working for them this summer, I never seen her up close though.. either way she must have been a wackadoo to work there, even if it was just for the summer...

Haha I got ticketed by the same the same PP guy back in high school a whole shitload in the 2hr zone cause he was a lazy bastard! He'd chalk the tire, and then return like 1hr40mins later and then write up tickets.

Then me and a buddy ran into said douchebag at Wendy's during lunch, and I made a point of sitting at the table next to him and (loudly) saying "You know what job I couldn't imagine doing? Parkign patrol. Imagine having a job you can't go home to tell your kids about." Haha the look on his face was priceless.

I used to run into these guys all the time while downtown. They were actually "hunting" my companies vehicles, they actually addmitted that to us. Some were complete dicks, others would apologize and tell me that they were just doin their job. The ones that were rude were idiots because after making me explain myself and getting a small lecture, they would still write the ticket and just waste both of our time. The only reason that I didnt really care was the company paid ALL parking tickets, So I yelled at a few when I felt like. But really I think they know that their job sucks, and thats why they are so anal.

15+/hour. As per their website.

People hate on them when they get fines same as they hate on cops when they get pulled over for speeding. Cops get more respect because they actually risk their lives a little more than the average meter maid

That's shit, get his badge and report him.

If you come up to your car as they're writing a ticket, you can tell them to stop since you're leaving. They have to.

Ever think that they just need a job, like everyone else in the world? Some of these guys actually DO have families to go home to, and not with huge pay checks either. So I know you all think you are hilarious doing things like yelling "is your mother proud!?" or "Boy, I sure am glad I dont have THAT profession to go home and tell my kids about", but really, some people just have it shitty, and for one reason or another ended up with that job, and have to provide for their families.

And SOMEONE has to do it regardless, they aint your fuckin roads, NOR your property that you guys choose to park on. Its provided for you, with a simple set of rules to follow.

If you all need to truly come on here and bitch about $20 tickets for 100% avoidable situations (eg. late with refilling the meter, parking too close to crosswalks), then you guys need to start taking responsibility for where the hell you guys park your 3500 lbs of metal in this city.

give me a break, sure when the metre runs out than its good write it up, but to actually mesure to see if your 3.9 metres instead of 5m, im still pretty sure you can still see the stop sign, or crosswalk.

The only issue is that you dont OWN these spots that you park in, and it is to your full understanding (or SHOULD be), that you are to be at least 5 meters away, and failure to do so will result in a simple ticket/fine. MOST people take this and think "geez, i better stay at least 5 meters away from this crosswalk, maybe...yes...maybe even more than 5."

Its pretty simple. I dont see where a jackoff like you gets that they can simply park however they feel like, and then when they dont follow simple rules, bitch about how they got a twenty dollar ticket (or $35).

Its simple buddy. Follow the fairly slack laws behind parking on our streets, and you wont get a ticket. Then you wont have to sell your house and car to pay the double digit ticket.

And you are honestly that ignorant to say that all parking officials are scum of the earth? Yea, you really shine over them  .

Ogpog, you have missed the point. No one here is arguing about parking where they want nor is anyone arguing about these losers needing a job. Of course they need a job; everyone does. But why the fuck would they choose a job writing tickets and fucking people over (even when it is parker's fault?) You're saying that they ended up with that job due to circumstance? I call BULLLLSHIT. Take a good look around, Calgary is booming, everyone is hiring, and you can easily find any job you want.

The bottom line is, the people who work as meter maids are mean dinks.

I find that people who were underqualified for most jobs, are still under qualified, yet they have a lot more choices for shitty places to work, not BETTER places to work. Its like "damn, it was hard gettin a job at the deer run Dairy Queen, but now i could walk in and get a job at just about ANY Dairy Queen." (Please note, I dont work for DQ)

Its just easier to get a job at your "qualification level", so under educated people try to find the jobs that give them the most dough for their abilities. Hence you have Meter Maids who still have cold wind blowing past their face, idiots giving them shit all day (even though they are parked on crosswalks, infront of stop signs, etc), and go home with "slightly higher than shitty" amounts of cash in their pocket.

They are normal people, not people who are angry at the world and decided that starting a new career in Parking Authority will give them the revenge they need.
