My brother is looking to buy a suv. He wants to spend around $35 000. He is NOT looking to buy new, and he wants something a little bit more luxurious.

Some of the ideas we have are:

2002-2003 Acura MDX
2002-2003 BMW x5 3.0
2002-2003 Cadilac Escalade
2002 -2003 Lincoln Navi

He seems to be leaning towards the x5.

Any other suggestions, or any comments on the above vehicles would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Out of those choices I would take the X5. I personally dont like overly huge SUVs (what I consider the Escalade and Nav).

Does the 3.0 L X5's have enough power?

He does alot of highway driving which entails alot of passing so a car with some power is a must.

good luck finding a 2002-2003 X5 for 35K.

so... excluding that off the list....

a 2003 Escalade will be your best best.. but then again... it'll have at least 100,000KMs on it.

Horsepower @ RPM
225@5900
Torque @ RPM
214@3500 (foot/lbs

Thats pretty enemic....for SUV's nowadays but if you want power and luxury...then Lincoln Navi it has both..

Lincoln Navi
300 HP @ 5,000 rpm; 355 ft lb , 481 Nm @ 2,750 rpm

around 35.

a few thousand here or there doesnt really matter.

^ it'll be 40,000+

so... for that price.. why wouldn't your brother just buy a 2005 of some sort? I'm just wondering why he wants to get a big SUV... as I would take a smaller and newer over a bigger and older vehicle.

I like the MDX's, as I think the X5 3.0 would be underpowered - but if your ok with that, then I'd go with the BMW.

Also consider a brand new toyota rav 4, 268hp, toyota build/reliability and fully loaded it would be close to your budget brand new and would have all the features like leather, power everything ,heated seats, etc.

Navigators and Escalades are perhaps the worst built vehicles out there right now IMO. If you've ever been in one, there is a huge abundance of cheap plastic, and nothing is done well at all. It costs car manufactuers less to build those SUV's than anything else and then they charge more. They are just a collection of parts from the lowest bidder with a caddy symbol slapped on there. Top did a good episode on the escalade, all they do is make fun of how poorly it's built. Build quality aside, incase you don't care about that, they will chug gas like mad.

Definately stick to the slightly smaller ones.

MDX's are junk, we have one and its safe to say it will be the last Honda product we ever own. The vehicle has been nothing but a plague of problems. For being a car-based SUV, I think it rides like a tin can.

Out of the original list I would go with the X5, but would probably lean more towards the V8 (which he won't find for $35k). A friend of a friend just picked up an 03 Navigator for $35K, but like previously pointed out, their build quality is quite poor.

You probably won't find an RX330 with average kms for $35K. You may find the older version, the 99-02 RX300 though.

If you could, the RX330 would get my vote

There is no way his brother is going to pick up a 4.4i X5 for less than 40K.

It all really depends on what your brother is going to do with it... is he using it for work? family? coolness factor?

X5 3.0 has about the same HP as the 330, roughly 225HP I believe......

I'd get the Navi/Escalade

Combination of the three but mainly for work.

He has a shop out in cold lake and does alot of travel to and from edmonton. He needs a car with a decent amount of room which is why a car like the Rav 4 wont work (x5 is also quite small so may not be as practical either)

What is so poor about that quality of the Escalade and Navigator?

The new rav 4 is pretty big man, it is available as a 7 passenger I believe this year. Its nothing like the old ones used to be with the tiny 4cyl and no room. Their completely changed.

If he does a lot of driving he's not gonna like the unreliability of the BMW, and I dont think theres a dealer there to fix it.

I'd stick with a Japanese or Domestic make. Those Navigators/Escalades are quite nice and the price makes them attractive, its a shame that they'll be worth less than a civic in a few years.

Yea he hates taking cars in for servicing and repairs but he insists he will do it if he gets a nice car.

I keep tellin him he should get some sort of domestic suv like a trail blazer or something.
Cheap to buy, somewhat nice, powerful, can be maintained locally etc...
however he only wants a 'nicer' name of a car.

anyways.

Any other suggestions or comments?

I dissagree with anyone who has negative comments about their MDX or the MDX in general. Parents drive one and its awesome. Its reaching the 100,000KM mark and still sounds like its brand new. The engine runs like a dream. It has power, looks and, reliability. Interior is pretty friendly and comfortable, lots of rooms to move and around and the stow and go type feature is awesome for transporting large goods. The best thing about the vechicle is its held its value well. MDX's with 100,000km sell for $30,000. All in all I would say by the MDX.

you should go check out the 01+ infiniti qx4, nice interior, pretty nice power. the generation before that is too underpowered, my parents own one of those so ye and when they took it for servicing they gave them a 01+ qx4 and ye, basically the same as ours just newer/better interior and stronger motor. but i would take the rx 300/330 over the infiniti just from revews on that car.

He test droved the Navi and really seems to be leaning towards that.
