Yah there was was a big article on this in the Herald today.

Interesting that it's $100 for spitting, $250 for soliciting but it's only $50 for carrying a knife.

That's fine with me because people spit too much on the street anyway.

The first two things pose interference to other civilians. Simply carrying a knife in your pocket does not.

I think carrying a knife is far, FAR more important for civilians then spitting.

It may be gross, and all around not a very good habit, but it is definetly something I could put up with if people were unable to carry knifes.

The thing is, I couldve walked by a hundred people downtown today who had knives in there pocket, but not once did any of them pose a threat to me. I never even saw one knife. Now if every single person on the street spat infront of me, and there were 20 teens soliciting outside of every store, i would have probably had quite a shitty walk.

The way I see it, dont piss people off, and you wont get stabbed.

Whats wrong with this law? I think its good. People aren't civil anymore, no manners, I mean for the love of God I was eating breakfast this morning in the SAIT Four Nines Cafeteria and people were holding forks and knives like they were preparing to jam them into the table. Lightly hold your utencils with the tips of your fingers, not the palms of your hands.

What happens if you have a cold/flu and you have an accumulation of mucus in your throat, and you try to extricate it from your mouth? Why should it be illegal for me to rid myself of germ ladden fluid?

Is it soon going to be illegal to cough/sneeze? That poses more of a threat as it's air borne germs, rather then composed and controlled luggie disposal.

Dont get me wrong spitting is disgusting esp. when you walk down the street and a dude walking the opposite way spits in our common path; then I COULD have been hit by the offender. Thats gross.

From a feasability and practicallity standpoint if they enforce this, its a waste of man power. We arent anything like signapore, we dont have nearly as much reason to be fearful of prosecution or the man power to control it.

They are putting spitting in the same category as speeding, speed kills, spit does not. Well maybe appetite.

The punishment for spitting should be to clean the street up for a day of two. That will teach you a lesson.
100 bucks ain't anything to a lot of people nowadays. Being a street cleaner in public would be quite a punishment to most people. It doesn't matter if the person has money or not.

The punishment for putting your foot on a bench? uh, you'll be a bench for a day or two to let the others to rest their stinky feet on. :D

I see the point for people who stand out front of a building smoking and spitting all day. I work with a few people like that, and it makes 8-10 feet of sidewalk on either side of the doors absolutely disgusting. But, if an insect flies into your mouth.... you can be certain that I would be spitting!

I was kind of thinking these things over, and wondered to myself, what sort of limits do they impose on us..?

Say for instance I wanted to eat a cat, or chase a squirrel in the park and then eat him (I don't, but play along) This would actually be illegle wouldn't it? or is it just frowned upon? I don't know for sure if it is against the law (Say I owned the cat), but how could it be? Now I know people will argue about how we're civilzed now, etc.. But if this was yrs ago, and I liked the taste of cats and squirrles, how can they tell me i can't eat one, we were animals at one time, and many people still are.... Know what I'm saying? I can see how they limit drugs and whatnot, because of the effects, but eating something they think is wrong? Some people think eating cows is wrong, but 10's of thousands of them get killed everyday, in alberta alone...

:dunno:

ps, I wans't even high while I thought this up...

countdown 5 years to "Equilibrium type" society lol. And nobody gives a fuck.

Was just reading yesterday on yahoo how Britain tops the world in "Big Brother" type measures. Everyday of your life you’re on a camera 300 times. Police enforcing laws against speech, thought and banning books.

We are starting to make courtesy and manners into laws. Making laws on the way people think and act. The way society is going with this is about the most disturbing thing I can think of. Much more so than any terror threat from Al Qaeda that I can imagine. And the funny thing is people don’t care and even welcome it. What sick animals we are.

It's because everyone is selfish, and has a "me me me" mentality. If they get something that benefits them, they'll fight hard for it without realizing that they've given up their own controls and freedoms to the government to get rid of things that are a nuisance. It's all good till something affects them negatively, then they whine, but then it's too late because it's accepted for the government to make all these rules to force us all to, like you said, think and act a certain way.

lilmira
11-03-2006, 09:20 AM
Freedom doesn't mean you can do whatever you want without consideration of the others. Yes, we don't need laws to control everything we do everyday but without rules we would turn into animals. It's all about balance.
Decency and common sense seems to be lost art these days. How many times have you seen people acting like a fool because they have no idea in how to live in a society? You have to wonder sometimes if we are pushing the lawmaker to have more control on us or the lawmaker trying to have more control over us?
If we all can act decent with common sense, we wouldn't need many laws and regulations.

Thanks for proving my point. What gives YOU the right to decide what's decent and common sense for everyone else? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean the entire population doesn't like it.

You feel it's OK to remove minority groups by creating laws to restrict the minorities because it annoys the majority. They did the same thing many years ago, it was called segregation. That is not progress.

Loitering in a public place or obstructing someone would cost $250.
haha, you know we can all be fined for going to a beyond meet at chinook. That's loitering. Curious what that obstructing someone is... does that mean I can get a bylaw officer to fine someone $250 for holding an elevator door open to finish a converation with someone not going on the elevator? That happens everyday in my building at work.

You are very welcome.

Again, it's all about balance. Yes, laws and regulations can be used to target a certain group of people in the society although they should be fair and unbiased. That's when democracy comes to play. That's why we here to express our opinion.

At the end of the day, if we all feel that's ok to spit and urinate in public. That's really nothing they can do.

Imagine the majority of the population start spitting whenever and wherever they feel like for whatever reason, there is really nothing they can do, can't they? How many people can they ticket? If that happens, the by-law will be useless because spitting is accepted by the majority.

They cannot just make a by-law without a valid reason.

The question is how acceptable are these actions (spitting, feet on bench...) by the general public.

Yes, it is true if the entire population decide to just go out and kill each other there is really nothing you can do. But why would we? Why would anyone just go out and murder anyone for no reason? You don't see animals just go out and kill each other and I'm sure they know nothing about laws.
You don't just go out and do random acts, do you? I don't read all the laws and regulations to figure out what I should and shouldn't do. Do you?
Are we so stupid now that we need someone to tell us what we should or shouldn't do on every single little thing? I guess some of us are.

i think it's extremely difficult to enforce something like that
laws like this are popular in asia where they have bylaw officers patrol crowded streets, throwing cigarette buts, spitting (even in the trash can since it evaporates in the air), spitting gum etc.

think the last time i spat in public was.... i don't remember
just my 2 cents

What do you when you chew indoors? Do you spit onto your carpet/floor? Spit into a bottle that you can throw out. It's a lot less disgusting than spitting on the ground, which is basically the intention of this law, imp. It's not that you can't spit, it's that you can't spit when it could offend someone or it could make a mess.

If you're jogging, playing sports, etc on a field and you spit, it's not that bad and it's not that offensive.

If you're downtown during the lunch hour and you spit onto the sidewalk or the road, it's considerably more offensive and the spit stays on the ground until it; a) evaporates, or b) gets stepped on by another person, which is more likely.

Glad this doesn't affect me. As a baseball player I got into a major habit of spitting and I do it alll the time. At least I'm respectful about it though. I don't spit on sidewalks or on the middle of roads or anything. What I do is I am for the corner of the ground where it meets the wall. I have pretty good aim so I can usually hit right where the wall meets the ground and it's not noticable in the least and no one for sure steps there.
