Just trying to get clarification on these 2 formats. It sounds as if TrueHD is fairly new :dunno: But what is the difference? Can't seem to find a channel/speaker configuration for TrueHD, but it says that it auto detects to 1, 2, 5, 8 channels when needed.

Basically just looking to find a speaker layout for this format. Might not go to it right away, but would like to get the speaker wire run in the walls and roughed in for when I do.

Way I understand 7.1 is (looking to see if TrueHD is different then this):

L......................C....................R

LS...........................................RS

LR............................................RR

Dolby TrueHD, from Dolby Laboratories, is an advanced lossless audio codec based on Meridian Lossless Packing. Support for the codec is mandatory for HD DVD and optional for Blu-ray Disc hardware. TrueHD supports 24 bit, 96 kHz audio channels at up to 18 Mbit/s over 8 channels (HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc standards currently limit their maximum number of audio channels to eight, Dolby TrueHD can output up to 14 sound channels simultaneously). It also supports extensive metadata, including dialog normalization and Dynamic Range Control.

TrueHD streams are supported in the HDMI standard.[1] All versions of HDMI cables can transport TrueHD streams which have already been decoded into uncompressed audio. All HD DVD players are required to be capable of decoding TrueHD into a minimum of two channels of uncompressed audio. Since support for TrueHD is optional for Blu-ray media, not all Blu-ray players can decode TrueHD streams. TrueHD streams which have not been decoded can be transported by HDMI version 1.3 and up to a capable AV receiver for external decoding, assuming each component supports HDMI 1.3.[1]

So in essence, it's just better quality sound, and can support up to 14 speakers (if/when hd dvd/bluray catches up to it)

If you're doing rough in wiring, you might as well throw a rear centre in too. Then you're covered for 6.1 and 8.1 in the future.

True HD will support a maximum of 8 discrete channels at a full 24 bit/96KHz bandwidth - so if you rough in 8 speaker locations you're good to go.
