Background: I have a 2 year old HP pavilion running XP home with service package 2. I did my regular virus scan with norton 2006 and it found a trojan. It automatically deleted the trojan. It then said that it found some adware and asked if i wanted to delet it. I said yes. Halfway though the deleting process my computer froze. So I restarted my computer like normal but something went wrong.

My computer will only boot up half way. Right at the point where the screen is black, it says XP home then the loading bar underneath it. Then it will freeze for a second and restart again. I have tried safe mod and practically everything you can do in the start up etc. "start up using last known working blah blah" didnt work either. When I tried to boot in safe mode it would freeze when it loaded .......\system32\Mup.sys.

I have gotten a blue screen that says "Unmountable boot error please restart" but still nothing.

Right now I am running Linux just so I can get some important school files off.

Is there anyway I can fix this without having to reformat and lose everything? I have alot of pretty valuable pictures of family vacations and parties with friends that I would like to keep.

I was told one way of fixing it would be to find a recovery disk and reinstall xp. That should re-install the file that I am missing and still keep all of my files.

I can only use Linus for a day so if you guys have any help what so ever it would be greatly appreciated.

do you have a winxp disk? You can try to reinstall/repair windows bootiing from that disk without reformatting.

Why not find that file off another computer and copy it onto yours?

backup all your files onto a removable harddrive or something other than the C: drive, then reformat.
