Has anyone competed in an automotive skills competition?
I wouldn't mind chatting with previous contestants to get the inside scoop.
I'm finally going to enter a couple of the Crescent Heights kids. :)

What do you want to know?

When I competed, the car was a 98 Escort that had 10 "faults"

First thing to do is run through the fuse panel with a test light. That found one blown fuse.

Second was an idle air control installed using a gasket with no holes!!!. The car would start and run if you had your foot on the gas......let it idle on its own and it would die. haha. Took the idle air control off and replaced the gasket....problem solved

Honestly can't remember the other things wrong. I think a fuel regulator was one, and I think I remember a pin being broken in a connector to one of the sensors we had to change.

The one that took us the longest.....we found 9 things wrong....but the 10th had us until we decided to do a full walk around check of the car AGAIN....and we noticed one of the license plate bulbs was burnt out. A small little thing thrown in, but easily overlooked.

so basically, if you've owned a car that was 15 years old and worked on it yourself, you would be pro at this contest

Agreed, it was all trouble shooting. For my year we had to figure out why the Topaz (high end machinery I tell ya) did not start. It was cranking, but in the end we had no fuel nor spark. And had to figure out why, out fuel pump relay was toasted and a few other small issues.

Oh by the way I had Barry Giles as a teach...
