This is just my rant as I don't want to hijack some other threads .
First off , yeah I'm white , meaning I was born here , but both my parents are from Europe .
As we typically review places it's become apparent lots of different folks offer lots of different opinions , so here's mine .
I travel lots . From a young age I've been exposed to many types of foods and am lucky enough to have a family that aspires to eating well . Food and the preperation of it , as well as the presentation of it ,means a lot . One could say that we've developed a high standard for dining . Now , in the course of reading about favorite places to eat , a few people every thread always pipe in about how they know the "Authentic " stuff , and the dirtier the place the better ." It's more like home " , you say . Well , I guess if rocks your world , then good , but I'd like my food prepared and presented without the fecal matter and rat shit , thank you very much . I tend to think that if the owners of place have and show a little pride about there establishment , say keep it clean and maybe some fresh paint every now and then , well , maybe it reflects there intentions in the kitchen as well .
Also , as I concider myself more of a adventure travelor rather then a " all inclusive " type , I do spend the time venturing off the beaten trails and have rarely come across places that take pride in eating in a shit nest . Sure you can eat off a vendor with a street trolly in the back alleys of Bangcock , but even there you can spot the vendor who takes pride and cooks with care versus the guy who just wiped his ass , picked his nose and dropped the meat on the oily street a few times . If you think that a little human filth gives the food more flavour , good for you . I want food thats nutritious and healthy , and I avoid the places where the cooks don't care , the servers don't care and the oweners don't care , well , they only care about the money I guess . Now , the cool thing about Calgary is we have many different ethnic groups with lots of choices , AND varying degrees of standards . Some people think eating at the cheapest places are good . Who cares about anything else other then it fills the hole and it's cheap . Who cares if the bathrooms are filthy , the kitchen is filthy , the floors are dirt covered , the windows caked over with grease , the service is pathetic , etc . I DO. When I order a chicken dish , it should be chicken , not some mystery meat . When I order sushi I want the fish fresh , and prepared with care , not thrown together .When I walk into a place I want it to be clean . I want to see that the owners care about my standards . I want to see out of the windows . I want service to be curtious and professional . I want to see that they care , because I care about ME , and that attitude for going to places that cater to MY standards or higher is what makes the difference between eating like a farm animal or a civilized human being . So please , please refrain from admitting you think eating crap is better for you , or that it's authentic and that's how they do it back home . Sometimes they do it back home like that because they have to , they may not necessarily want to or even know better , and really , if you are eating crap and are proud of it , well , it says a lot about you .
Rant off .
