Hey can you do better on the price considering? Futureshop sells the updated version for 30 dollars less brand new (with no cables). How much without cables?

actually i'd say the 531 is better..
the 731 is newer, but they took out 5.1 output connections and a DTS decoder and most importantly, the ever-so-praised about faroudja chip.

there are some improvements in the 731 though,i forget what.. like there's a 14 in 2 card reader instead of the normal 8 in 2 on the 531.. (mehh.. i can't even list more than 5 types of mem cards.. )..

i have the 531.. good machine.. plays almost anything i throw at it.. makes downloads look pretty good on hd.

i'm quite technologically illiterate but i'm curious, are these upconverting dvd players almost a "must" if i were to watch dvds in HD tv?

very very very true ive used both because my 531 conked out and they replaced it with the 731 under warranty the picture sound everything about the newer one sucks i miss the old one its really worth the 150 bump for a good product!!

I think that $150 is pretty reasonable. Considering that the link I left for the cable, is the same cable I have. The MonsterCable HDMI-DVI cable is $150 by itself. But if you want, you can PM me an offer, and I'll take it under consideration.

What they do is convert the standard 480p resolution picture of a DVD to a signal that is 780p or 1080i. So, they make the picture look better, and give you better clarity and definition. Personally, I would use the upconverting on everything, including Sesame Street DVD's for my daughter. You've never seen Big Bird the way he should be unless you've seen him this way!:rofl:

yes it does play divx files..

I put on like 6 avi movies on one dvd-r..
or like 12 episodes of Heroes on one disc..

then you can watch it in 1080i.. awesome stuff..

I have one, that I might sell for the right price, pm me offers..

nothing under 120.. this machine is better than the current one out there..
