Just something I picked up from another forum: Carfax does have people scan message boards and forums. If you put up a VIN number, they simply go in and find the account that last looked up that particular VIN number, and then suspend that account with a nasty email. It's happened a number of times on the other board, without any knowledge or involvment of either the carfax-er or the carfax-requester. It would be much safer to PM the number and keep it all private.

Just a tip.

These threads never cease to pop up daily, even after people post in every thread (such as myself) explaining why Carfax is useless except for American cars, and the only reliable source is Car Proof. It gets me every time, and people are probably buying cars with all sorts of unknown issues/history because of them.

^

i think the vast majority of people DO know that (myself included)

but surely if someone has the means, then why not?!?

I suppose it can't hurt, as long as you don't trust it or buy a car based on carfax. I also think if people knew that, they wouldn't waste their $20 on carfax and they would spend it on carproof. You are right in that no harm is being done by checking though.

agreed, its just a tool that aids in the search process, by no means can it be completely trusted as I have found out
