No I don't think he was referring to this link, he's talking about a Chinese car that looks like a Lexus at some auto show. Although the above does illustrate the fact that that BYD company will stop at nothing to rip off other manufacturer's designs!

Edit: Maybe this link? :dunno:

The problem is that some many parts are outsourced to build in China, and foreign country doesn't own these companies or has control of China's law system, it's not hard to pick and build out of those parts.

I am chinese, but I wish I can agree to your statement. Because about 4-5 months ago, I saw this video regarding about the safety-rating results of chinese-made vehicles. The results were much much less then average, it was outrageously (sp?) horrible.
As much as I support the chinese economy. I think they should stay out of developing and manufacturing in the automotive sector.

LOL have you guys actually ridden in a Chinese car? The one I rode in a few years ago felt like it was going to completely fall apart. They are basically where the Koreans were 20 years ago. The car didn't have seat belts. The suspension felt like it was made up of rocks. And it maxed out at about 90 km/h if even that. He had to redline 3 gears before even getting to 50 km/h.

I guess if they copy DVDs and games, then why not cars. Plus they've been doing this for a long time... All the way back to the days of the Audi 5000. I think I've got pics somewhere...

a few yrs ago, chinese were not even able to make their own engine for a electrical bike, but nowadays, bema has their first oversea manufacture outlet in china. most 3 and 5 series bmw in asian market are built in china, including japan, india.
and also volkswagon, audi, honda, toyota, mitsubishi nissan etc manufactures.and a mercedez manufacture factory next yr.

u'd be surprised how those look-alike vehicles are actually built from the same assemble line with those germany and japan manufactures.

okay, so they monopolize and buy out huge companies, so what? doesn't justify them being good car makers and/or designers which is what this thread is really about. Chinese cars are junk IMO, and most cant even pass a 1 star safety rating.

what you are saying is yes, they do build most 3 series, 5 series bmws and other manufacturers vehicles in china, but those are based on the designs of the europeans etc. just because the chinese built something based on other designs, engineering, safety regulations, doesnt make themselves good car makers. They're own designs and engineering, again, are pieces of shit played off of other car makers that cant even withstand crashes at 40mph. i'd buy a kia before any chinese brand anyday.

and btw, that should explain why 3 and 5 series bimmers need to be taken back to the dealer all the time. hahaha j.k.

It is interesting to see those comments as myself a Chinese from HK. I won’t defend any side or who’s right/wrong, racist or not. As I know most of you guy will walk into Walmart shopping comfortably tomorrow like this post has never happened. And products that stamp Made in China will be still around you everyday.

I think you guys never considered that people who live in China have a different set of values in their life. Perhaps those cars are badly built. What if those brands offer the price-tag difference? Will you still get a car to drive or walk 10km to work? The price of the look-a-like can be ¼ of a real brand. Poverty is common in China. A car is considered a luxury item. I’m sure most people in Canada rarely encountered the lack of anything whatsoever. The latest I heard were lack of Wii and the anti-pregnant pills. Anyhow, those cars exist is because of the market demand, not because they just want to copy. We should be glad they are only over in Mainland China not in Canada. But wait ‘Oh snap’, What about those kit-cars over here?

Okay, that’s enough for the copycat brands, what about the real brand cars. I happened to know people who do private import/export automotive in China. He imports new high ends LHD SUVs into China. You can import anything and everything. The day I visit his lot over the summer he got about 200 units sitting there waiting to ship up to China. They have X5, Touareg, Cayenne, Navigator, Land Rover, and H3. Some of them were source from US caused I saw those yellow reflectors & GM Quality stickers. So, to get a luxury car in China it also comes with a price tag. The listed price never what you are going to pay. Even you can afford one is depends on who you know. The car may not be available right away. You have to pay more for the expedite service. He told me that one time he had a customer who really want to be the first guy to have a factory modded Cayenne Turbo(not too sure what if they have in Canada). Anyway, he arranged a flat bed truck at the international terminal hub. When the car got off the cargo ship then towed it to the airport terminal. The car onboard to the next flight on the DHL cargo. I think only some people can afford a bill like that.

Probably my little story doesn’t do much. Is it possible to let other people to drive their shit and sell their shit? If you choose to not buy them, you are already do yourself a favor. I always tell myself that it is easy to misunderstood people but to understand one is hard. Just like I cannot understand my GF. I have no way to control my hoe.

lol are you kidding? the chinese do make good products, in fact all my air jordans are made in china. im not being racist but its true. and they are good quality...

..but to buy any of these cars over a proven, safe, more reliable car from the US is plain stupid. the chinese have been copying and manufacturing cars like this for years and we still have yet to see them hit the international market. so what does that tell you? most of these peices of junk cant pass a simple first stage safety rating or road test.

^ do they REALLY need to market it outside of China? Not really. with 1.4B people..... I think they need to just sell it to their own people.

:whipped:

you know what... i'm gonna agree with you on that point. Because it is true that different people have different value towards money and standard of living. People in china who are able to afford a vehicle (i'm talking JUST a vehicle, not asking for high-end vehicles) wants to purchase the best bang for bucks vehicle, and yet wont' be ashamed to drive it out on the street.
While people in NA have a higher ability to afford what they desire to have.

I think the point is that these cars cost way less than their imported counterparts. Last I remember when my dad was in China, he told me the prices of some of these cars are less then 10 000 RMB, that is less than $2000 canadian! For a country like China, these are the products that people NEED, not a new BMW or a Merc. And what someone above said is true, they have a large enough market in china to sustain themselves and most of them dont even plan on exporting these cars.
