View Full Version : Can anyone explain what the letters in BMW model mean?

I mean the numbers and letters after the model, say like a 328Ci, 328I, 328iC, etc...
The only one I know is iX means AWD.... or was that Xi...
Help please.

c is saloon
ci is coupe

or vice versa...
x is AWD
e is like luxury i think?

X = awd

Ci = Coupe

iC = convertible

i = 4 door sedan

With the new E90 3 Series, the C letter designation doesn't apply anymore. Sedans/coupes/carbiolets all share the same "i" letter designation now.

And of course, the second two numbers are the engine size. 318 = 1.8l, 325 = 2.5l, etc.

Oh, whoops. I was only thinking about the older ones ie e30 and e36.. I thought they were all like that. Sorry.
