View Full Version : Mazda speed3 vs Vw gti

For a daily driver thats fun, reliable and fairly inexpensive, which one would you guys pick? Base price is about equal. The gti seems to have a nicer interior, but the speed3 is going to be a bit quicker right out of the box.

Anyone here own one or the other?

I personally prefer the GTI, imo it looks nicer, better quality, better resale value, more potential, and made in Germany!

Definitely the MS3.

But as far as "reliable" goes, I wouldn't pick either. Volkswagen and Mazda in the past few years have had the worst reliability of pretty much any manufacturer. Even Hyundai has been doing better.

GTi FTW! Not quite as fast but it has a much higher quality interior and the DSG trasmission is as good as it gets. I respect the MS3 but I always found the Mazda 3 hatchbacks homely compared to the sedans.

Are you going to be able to get your hands on an MS3? I would go with the GTI only because I don't like paying MSRP (or MSRP+) for cars.

All good points.

Is it possible to pay under msrp for the new gti's? I didnt think they would move on the price.

An ecu reflash for the gti would close the hp/trq gap between the two. But, there is a performance package for the ms3 that can be purchased through certain mazda dealerships, which adds another 30 or so hp and still retains warranty.

The GTI is a fatty compared to the MS3, I would go for the MS3.

I feel the gti doesent drive like a fatty though, i mean i took mine to the track once and it was in the summer, i ran 15.1 @ 92 mph, not bad for bone stock i think.

If the gti is heavier, it isnt by much. C&D says the ms3 weighs 3180lbs, the gti 3220lbs with dsg.

I went and drove a mazda speed 3 before buying my car, they dont even compare on so many differnt levels, it was honestly a no brainer.

most of the tuning company's down in the states offering these reflashes are able to completey hide it from VW scan/diagnostic tools for warranty purposes of course....

a mazdaspeed 3 doesnt compare to your '02 gti? wtf are you smoking? a MS3 would wipe the floor with your stock 180hp '02 gti...

Maybe means a Mazdaspeed Protege? I think all the MS3's so far were pre-sold, not sure if they'd let anyone test drive?

The effect of additional weight is more profound in the corners.

VW
- can get it in 3 door or 5
- subjective, but much nicer looking
- dsg ownes all (if you go for it), or 6 speed
- decent color choices
- decent power
- great handling
- great interior
- supposedly better build and quality than previous vw's
- $29ish before anything

Mazda
- 5 door squished mini-van look only
- 6 speed
- retarded color choices (red only?)
- limited slip
- 263hp 280 tq is retarded huge.
- quality unknown
- $30ish before anything

so it effectively comes down to huge power w/ limited slip (awesome and necessary) vs. better interior and exterior. tough choice.

I have to say both are great choices.

i went gti, i know gti is a 3-6 month wait. (in most cases)
it's fast for sure, quailty is great so far. there is no wiggle room in the price of the gti. gti is about 35k out the door with some options

ms3 looks kinda ugly to me, but i do like the power it puts out. if it was awd i may have considered it.

personally i'd rather pull up in a classy vw then a mazda.

480 newton meters yo! still puzzled huh... :) and 147 giga-watts of hp! i leave fire trails back to the future style ahah. nah, its just kilowatts.

You're full of shit. You didn't test drive a MS3. Nice try though.

Vagabond142

One thing you'll have to watch for on the MS3 is that I would assume with 263 hp it will torque steer like a drunk cow. But both are pretty nice, although I would personally take the GTI

Unless you are very connected. Test drive of Mazdaspeed3 is for potential buyers (deposit) only. If you haven't put down a deposit yet, you might be out of luck since canadian Mazdaspeed3 units are very limited (750 including 07). Though rumor is that Mazda Canada may bring in more units in 07 and in more colours.

From what i have seen at the track they trap 88-91mph in Calgary. That is not very fast.

I would go for the GTi as well.

the ms6's are slow...include in that troubles with heatsoak and those ms6's are not very fun cars to drive, not to mention they feel like a boat.

yeah, I wasn't a fan of it when I drove it. It feels much bigger to drive than it looks.

GTI here. Drove that one too. Much better. Just my opinion though. I could care less about the numbers or the specs. It's about how it feels when you're behind the wheel. I suggest if you're really torn to takeboth of them out for an afternoon. Good luck on your purchase.

having owned a mk4 gti and now i own a MSP (mazdaspeed protege) ...i would go with the gti mainly because the mazda is not as reliable....i dont know about the MS3, but the MSP is apperantly very bad with reliability and the block tends to blow after 10 psi and 250 whp

If all you care about is speed go with MS3, if you want a tight package... go with GTI. Mine should be here in a little over a month.

I suggest you drive both back to back...and if you wanna buy one and get a break on either one go to North Vancouver...they're willing to deal way more than Calgary dealers. I got offered a 1400$ discount on a brand new in stock GTI without even asking at Capilano VW

GTI for shur i'v sat in both and GTI has a way nicer interior and if you can find some dyno graphs for the two engines in the cars you'll see the 2.0t has one of the nicest torque and power curves of any turbo car out there were the MS3 is very "spikey" so you get all the power but only get to use it for such a short period. and as a few others have saide GIAC x chip reflash with make the GTI a rocket

^ Great post! There's a Civic SI dyno graph in there as well. Power is good, but torque numbers are pitiful and peaks way too high.

http://www.automobilemag.com/features/0610_z+2007_honda_civic_si_sedan+dyno_chart.jpg

I bet Honda would be the best bet for fuel economy though if you're not bagging it. I'd add that car to your list - at least consider it. I know that a lot of dealerships are getting 07 Civic SI's in now - wouldn't be hard to get one.

Do they call it V-tech because it makes a V shape in the graph?

(sir still a decent car though)

Yes, the new si is about $4k cheaper than the gti and ms3, and of course has that "honda reliability". Not sure if I could live with the crazy dash though.

the new gti is cool and fugly in its own way. plus for what your paying for it is slow. body wise, its not wide enough for how tall it is and the true definition of the mini mini van. but they do have a sick front end.

mazdaspeed 3, that car is pure sex. next shipment comes in feburary and they are going to be white. can't go wrong with that choice looks and performance wise

The Civic SI would be a great car too. If it's anything like the RSX-S which I assume it is, if you don't drive it hard, it'll feel like something is wrong with the car. LOL You can't granny drive a Honda, it's so much smoother after you 'bag' on it haha

I might as well throw in my beloved Subaru WRX into the equation, why not that?

Wrx has a lot going for it. Getting up there on price though, and while the interior isnt bad, it does seem kind of cheapish' for what they cost.

If I could have only one car (daily driver) under $40k, wrx would be a great choice.

... mazdaspeed3. nothing against veedubs, but they arent the most reliable cars in the world, and dont get me wrong neither are mazdas.

but personally i think for the money there's no better car than the mazdaspeed3.

BUT!!! everyone has their own opinion and tastes, personally i ove the styling of both cars (even tho i wish the mazdaspeed3 came as a sedan) i like the interior WAY more on the mazdaspeed3, but if you want an automatic, go with the GTi for sure.

Good Luck with your decision!!!
