Downloading With Telus

Ive bin noticing for a while that my download speeds are pretty brutal but i always chalked that up to being with telus. I noticed though that no matter what, if i download anything of significant size (75mb+), i dont get any higher then 161 kbps. Whats strange is not that it never goes above that but it pretty much always stays exactly at that speed. Even if im downloading using multiple sources/programs the individual speeds vary but the sum of all of them is always 161 kbps.

Does this seem weird to anyone else? Is it something in how im configured or does telus have some kind of cap on my connection? (is that possible?)

Sounds like you are on telus high speed light... so yes there is a cap. 1.5mb/s its super slow. It may go slightly above that, but ya, it won't go much higher.

Alright if the cap is set at 1.5mb/sec and im only get 161 kb/sec doesnt that mean its downloading at way below the capped speed. Isn't 1.5mb/sec = 1500 kb/sec? Or do i have this conversion wrong?

Ya that's Telus alright. I used to have their "high speed" service and it was capped at 162.5KB. 1.5Mb/sec = 1,500Mb/sec, but you're dealing with BITS. Divide 1,500 by 8 and you get a theoretical max of 187.5KB/s. Remember "B" is Bytes and "b" is bits.

I ditched Telus LONG ago because of that, and am enjoying a constant 600KB/s with Shaw. And it's cheaper too when you bundle!!

must be nice, I have high speed 3mbps and i can't seem to break 100/sec. not to mention they always block my open ports and the thing is all wanky...stupid gf signed a contract awhile back in this house so i'm stuck with this trash. Miss my shaw

have you fwd'd your ports correctly? also its 3MegaBits/Sec which is around 375 KiloBytes/Sec and that is the most you can possibly achieve ever.

Love my normal shaw, hear the extreme is good but only once and a while do you notice a difference.

Im sure you could get outta your contract, you just may owe the money for a monitor or whatever you got for free

yeah im with telus too and the fastest ive ever downoloaded at was 164kb...it sucks:(

When I download off of torrents, I typically run at 150K in the day and can hit 440 at night when they let more bandwidth free.

Honestly I would switch to shaw regardless, also telus is palgued with horrible Customer Service and the more people who are online in your area are affected more than is noticeable on shaw.

i get like 100K a sec not 100 Megs lol. I seem to have isues with the wire here now I think. Port forwarding is ok...telus just sucks. I thought they didn't limit bandwidth?? Oh well, after all the mess ups maybe they'll let me out of it for free

Why do you think Telus had to resort to giving away LCD monitors and computers? What did Shaw give away? NOTHING. I am sure lots of ppl got suckered into Telus with those giveaways... But then again, I am sure lots of folk are quite content with the 160'ish cap. It actually *does* make a diff even during regular surfing. Pages are just that much more responsive. Plus it helps that whatever took me about an hour to get using Telus only takes 10 minutes or less with Shaw. :thumbsup:

yah thats why i switched from telus to shaw myself. It used to be comparible to shaw back in the day, then became 160k/s and i lived with it, then said fuck it its too damn slow, called them they said all is fine and tried to upsell me to the more expensive bundle. i told em fuck off and went with shaw
