Whats the deal with this new station??? Will they play more old stuff? Instead of playing the same requested shit over and over?? I like Cjay.. but im getting really tired of all the stations here in calgary.. they don't know how to play any variety anymore.

I think Vibe is the worst though.. top 3 at 3.. top 6 at 6.. top 10 at 10 lol... it can't possibly change that much in a couple hours...and they play the same 10 songs every hour..... I could go on a long rant about it lol
Im almost ready to commit myself to a sattelite radio to cure myself from the boredom.

lol just get a mp3 deck or something that has a sd card slot in it, forget the radio. mix it all up yourself. i wonder how much dvd/mp3 decks are :D or if they even exist. 4 gigs worth of songs = hundreds of hours of non repeating songs

My bad, still excited as hell.
I think the worst thing about Cjay (same stale 4 year old playlist aside) is the amount of commercials they air. You can't turn to the station without a commercial on, or Jerry Forbes or another old hack DJ hocking some garbage. They will NOT stray from their list for fear of advertisers leaving. Ask to play something edgy and new, and they say no, and then proceed to play Creed or Matchbox 20. Seriously, who the fuck listens to that shit? Another beef is Cjay sponsoring and putting their name on local concerts that come to town, but maybe have played their songs only a handful of times... It's embarassing to say the least.

By definition I don't think radio stations know how to play variety. They play the songs that they are a) paid to play, or b) asked to play. As painful as it is to hear some of the same songs on the radio, this is not a Calgary-specific phenomenon. Even large urban areas have this same problem. When I worked in LA, I would hear the same songs on those radio stations that I would here. In fact, at one point during my work day I heard Unfaithful by Rihanna (and I'm not exaggerating) 10 times in one 8 hour work day.
Stations that play variety don't really exist. Even other stations that are not Top 40, and only play 'classics' tend to play the same songs over and over again. Jack, Lite, and the Q do it as well. When I listen to those stations, I'll hear the same songs every day as well.
The problem is not that our radio stations don't play variety. The problem is that other cities, Edmonton included, have a wider variety of radio stations to choose from.

What about edmontons hip-hop station. I was unfourtunately(jk)
in the chuck on thursday, and they had old skool lunch. It was actually kinda good, but I left the city as fast as I could lol:)
Terrestrial radio is dying and I'm glad to see it go. Yesterday I punched all the presets on my deck and everyone had commercials at the same time. Happens at least a couple times a week to me.
Last year I had a ton of windsheild time traveling coast to coast for O&G, and without a doubt Calgary has some of the worst radio I've come across. Winterpeg being one of the better cities for radio IMHO.

am1060 was great, cjay wasn't bad at the start, when most of the 1060 crew moved there, but in the last few years they are afraid of losing their #1 rock station title that they will play only "safe songs" and will not stray from hits.
example, you will only hear these songs by these artists...
oasis - wonderwall
metallica - enter sandman, wiskey in the jar, turn the page
greenday - american idiot stuff, MAYBE basket case if you are lucky
aerosmith - come togeather, angel, or something off their latest cd which sucks
etc.
offspring - hit that, self esteem
queens of the stone age - little sister
then top that off with boring dj's who steal all their material from the internet and dj's from bigger state side stations, and WAY to many commercials that are so annoying they make you want to tear out your hair. when they aren't playing commercials for sleep country canada and that god awful snorring commercial for soundsaround, the dj's are busy trying to promote cjay's own events 10 times an hour.
i welcome any new station that will give the "stable" stations a wake up call that they can't just be the station that tries to please everyone. a majority of people only listen to music as background noise, and as such, radiostations can get away with playing the same tracks, by the same bands, because they are paid to do so, or because your average radio listener doesn't know any songs besides what the radio tells them to listen to. I really look forward to the day when a mainstream station plays some lesser known bands, or lesser known hits from big bands that can be found on most people's ipod's but would never be heard on conventional radio.

I'm just excited to have a station that isn't owned by Standard Radio. Stations like CJAY and VIBE don't have much of a choice in what they play when they're controlled by a gaint corporation.
Anyone notice that CJAY has started saying "Less talk, more rock" and actually sticking with it during non-peak hours? Its nice, but pretty obviously only because of all the new stations launching.
When the new stations go under, which 75% of them will, it'll go back to DJ's talking about how "great" their experiance was at some car dealership and squeezing advertising everywhere they can.

^^^^ nah the dj can mix and pre-record, its radio noone can tell if its live or not. either that or get permission to broadcast live recordings other djs. those can be 2 hours a piece, string a few of them together and you can easily make it through the night.

One last tid bit on the "not rock" subject (when this thread actually started about a new radio station with an undetermined format, not rock station) I know the show in question ends at 7am on sat and sun mornings but never knew when it started. I always came in around 5am.

The only way to go is satellite radio, there are 14 rock stations, 4 new music/top 40, 5 rap, 3 techno and 1 disco 4 latin, sports, comedy and so on. Once you have satellite you can never go back to the bullshit that the call radio, it is all them talking about crap or another comercial then the same song from a hour ago IMO. Satellite  Calgary radio:thumbsdow

thats my solution
I HATE VIBE and all the other stations here that dont know how to play anything but the same crap over and over.
Vibe WAS good when it played good R&B and RAP
AND NOW IT BLOWS !!!!
Calgary needs to be more multicultural with its radio and more open to all the music out on the market.
WE DEFF. need a station that USED to be like vibe back in the day.
But alas alot of people here dont like rap and r&b they think it promotes violence and etc....

This "X" station is going to have to pull some crazy shit to get me away from Q 107. Alice Cooper at Night is gold, he plays music I've never heard before. A couple of weeks back he played a jazz version of Stairway to Heaven that was just great, but I missed who the artist was. Argh!
So, what X needs is Alice Cooper All Goddamn Day or something to that effect. ;)

Very true. It improved a bit when they launched, but in my room i still get poor reception, car is fine though, but my sister cant get it at her work either.

I dont' even get a faint single in my room, but cjay vibe and country 105 are the only ones i can get clearly :banghead:
And as much as I like Billy Talent, they're playing them like cjay does nickleback
I thought i would try this out at work on friday. I heard System of a down, Beastie Boys (intergalactic) , then Cypress Hill (insane in the brain). i am now hooked. its my Altnation when i am not on Sirius.

DJ's are now on air and sounding good. The morning show has a ton of potential. With Q playing classic rock and X playing new music, Stale old Cjay92 is just no longer needed. They are now officially fucked.

Agreed.
They are overplaying Billy Talent, Blink 182 and My Chemical Romance.
Enough with the teener punk.

I love the music, but i can't listen to the station, because it cuts out for a split second at least once a minute, and the reception is really bad compared to other stations. I hope they get their shit together, becauset hey play good music.

I agree, they do need to address the signal issue asap.

i was holding off on posting here until i got a couple days listening in.
the good:
-90's at 9, all request
-i requested "love spreads" by the stone roses, and they played it, thats a first for calgary mainstream radio, lol
-Ongoing History of New Music with Alan Cross, this is an EXTREMELY good show, anyone interested in the history behind alternative, music, listen to this
the bad:
-over playing newer songs, ie alexisonfire, billy talent, three days grace
-no nickelback guarentee makes no sense, they won't play nickelback but they will play other bands that sound the same and are produced by chad krouger via 604 records :dunno:
overall, its like a shitty version of my ipod, minus the trance and a lot of rap (but i still want to request tupac and see what will happen).
i think cjay might see their title as #1 station in canada slip now that there is competition in the city, not saying x will take the title but it will make for a large decline in cjay listeners if they continue on that path.
overall -

Between my brother and I, we've heard 3 different sublime songs, and apparently they play bad religion too. Awesome. I'm interested to see what other actual punk rock bands they will play.

Some good music played last night, they should get a better signal but the morning folks are a refreshing change from the usual beating the dead horse CJAY jokes.
